Childress is superior to Matthews. He is longer and more athletic and a better shooter than Matthews.
Here is some proof that the league thinks Childress is better:

Phoenix, San Antonio, Jazz and other all offered Childress the full MLE.

Wesley had interest from San Antonio but when Portland outrageously overpaid they backed off big time. Wesley is a good pick up at the right price. No one in the league thought that Wesley was worth the full MLE, including the GM of Portland knew he was overpaying.

The problem is that Childress had options and when players have options other than the Jazz they accept those other offers.

We just don't and won't get Free Agents to sign here unless we overpay. That is why we need to build through the draft and why I was so frustrated that we didn't do what was necessary to move up in the draft.

Suns dumped Diaw long ago. They're losing Barbosa in this deal but with how Dragic has played they can certainly afford it.

But it now looks like the Suns have swapped Amare for Turkoglu and Childress for about the same $$$.
