Contraction: Good or Bad?

Interesting take on contraction.

If the shuttering of teams was kept to only 2 teams, this could be great! The Clippers are a joke and have been ruining kids careers for decades. Shutter out teams like Clips, and Detroit, and the league could definitely benefit.

Detroit? They are one of the more successful NBA franchises after the Lakers/Celts. They've also won a championship within the last decade. I could see possibly getting rid of the clippers, but no way on the Pistons.

Donald Sterling won't sell the team and he won't contract the team. It would be New Orleans and Memphis cut, Pacers and Kings are also possibilities.

There won't be contraction though, with the improving economy the Europe plan could be back on track.

It ain't improving THAT quickly.

I like the idea of knocking off a couple of teams. The NBA shouldn't have expanded after miami/minny/orlando.

I only say Detroit cuz michigan has the worst economy in the nation. Even worse than Californias. They can't sell tickets, and are desperate for a new owner. Even when the recession for most of the country is over, Detroit will still be years behind. Things are so bad there that Detroit is actually paying to train local automotive workers as film grips, AND paying film studios so highly that they are losing money, to make movies in Detroit. I could see The Pistons being shuttered, or at least relocated.

P.s. Sorry for the ramble.

They can't sell tickets because the pistons suck (right now). The auto industry has been in decline for years, and yet they had the longest streak of sold out games in the whole league until dumars blew the team up. The economy is worse now, no doubt, but the Palace still right in suburban michigan where there is enough middle-class households to the support the team. Detroit, as a city, is no doubt F'd. But thats why they moved the pistons to Auburn Hills, MI. It ain't detroit.

As a MSU student, the pistons are far from the top of the list of teams to be contracted. Stern would probably contract us before the pistons (namely if we lost deron, and had to rebuild like the pistons).

Also, the film industry has been a huge boon for Detroit (and a lot of Michigan). The incentives given to the film industry are (1) tax credits and (2) cheap ass real estate. Neither bankrupt the city (or the state), and given the industry has created 57$ million in wages for the state, it's worth the price of admission.

I've heard from people that Europe is a pet project Stern wants to have happen before he retires.

You're totally right about him saying that, but I have a pet project that involves all the Victorias Secret models, and I ain't counting on it.

Good info man. I never really thought about the Palace being in Auburn Hills instead Detroit, even though it is the Palace in Auburn Hills. The big problem with their film incentive program is that is covers all expenses, in state and out, so the more projects they get coming through, the more money they will begin to lose. They need to change it to a strictly in-state incentive like most other states. Otherwise Michigan essentially pays Morgan Freeman 10 million dollars to take back to California. That money doesn't stay in Michigan.

If you ran Victoria's Secret you'd have a chance to fulfill your desires.

There can only be so many mega-star teams. The writings on the wall. Started with Celts, full blown with Miami, and now Carmelo.

Next guess, anyone?

How big a contraction is a better question.
