Karl Malone--Things You May Not Know

Post#1 » by retiredcoach » Fri Feb 18, 2011 6:46 am

Karl was in town last week as everyone was aware. He spoke out as often as anyone would listen.

Here's a few things the younger fans may not know about Karl.

He was a tough guy.

He didn't always make good decisions.

And he thought Sloan was going to retire along time ago. His bluster about rebuilding was also cover for him not liking the $10 mil contract LHM offered him after his last year paid $19.3 million. LHM would have given him two years. He would have gotten the scoring record, but partly to save face he took the league veteran's minimum salary of $1.5 mil from the Lakers. Remember the good decisions thing above.

Still didn't make good decisions after he left.

I first met Karl when I was visiting SLC in his rookie year and stopped by Westminster to watch the Jazz practice. We had mutual acquaintances at La Tech. After watching him play, it was obvious he was going to be an excellent player. After talking to him, I remember thinking he's got a big ego, and he was somewhat shy back then so the way he talked reminded of another, Malone, Moses Malone nicknamed "Mumbles".

It didn't take Karl long to start talking and keep right on talking. I wish he had stayed with the Jazz two more years before retiring, and had taken a shot at the scoring record.

I don't blame him a bit. Whether the rebuilding thing was an excuse or not, it was true. I had no problem with him taking one last shot at the gold in LA. I think it was a fitting end to his career, too, in that he gave everything he had (the iconic torn jersey comes to mind), but still came up just short.

That first article is ridiculous. The rest is just a testament that people should really not be listening when he voices his "opinion" on the Sloan incident.

Quote from first article on Malone's hit on Isaiah. "Before I could react from his shove to my chest to get me out of the way, he picked Isiah Thomas up like you would pick up your three year old son, and carried him very carefully into the locker room for further evaluation."

3 Minute mark on video shows Isaiah walking to the locker room.

I agree, that first article is a joke.

I remembered the hit looking a lot more malicious back when I first saw it. It's Karl, so it was probably intentional, but you're going to see a lot worse than that, even in today's NBA. Just Karl's force and a bad angle that tore Isiah's face up.

The quote was from Michael Lowe who is a podiatrist that went down on the court to try and help out with the situation. Lambier did help pick up Thomas, but he didn't carry him into the locker room. He followed behind him.

I'm not sure why Lowe's quote makes the article a joke. It's a fairly accurate description of some of Malone's tough moments as a player causing injuries with his elbows. It's compiled by an alumnus of Rice University. Dave Ramer's, a Rice player, career was ended by Malone with an elbow to the face. I didn't see a lot of opinion interjected into the compilation. He just copied what was reported.

If you think you know a lot about Karl, here's a quiz you can take.

Reason it's a joke is because it took me 5 min to discredit this doctor. If I am going to write an article, at least show the validity of your sources. I find it hilarious that this author would call out Karl Malone as being dirty and then promote the hospitality of Lambier. I never claimed to know everything about Malone, but you know damn well every player in the league would have loved to have him on their team. Some merit to that.
