Jazz's traded player exceptions

Post#1 » by Fido » Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:59 pm

Today is a milestone day. It is the day that our Ronnie Brewer traded player exception ($2,717,161) expires.
Jazz's traded player exceptions according to ShamSports:
Matt Harpring $6,500,000 22nd December 2010 - Expired
Eric Maynor $1,318,920 22nd December 2010 - Expired
Ronnie Brewer $2,717,161 18th February 2011 - Expires today

That just leaves these:
Carlos Boozer $1,400,000 8th July 2011 (leftovers from the Al Jefferson deal)
Kosta Koufos $1,298,640 13th July 2011

There isn't much that could've ever been done with most of those exceptions. The only real asset was the Harpring exception, which was a bummer to see slip by.

1. Few TPE's are spent - most are allowed to expire.

2. Even fewer are spent if a team is over the lux, and has to pay double.

3. And fewer still are spent if the lux team is small-market.

I'm a guy that hates to see any assets wasted, but I don't think that UTA ever had any intention to use those TPEs. They already went far over the lux for you, and that's more than many owners are willing to do.

I wouldn't necessarily go quite that far. I think we might very well have used them, except then we got the massive Boozer TPE, used it on Jefferson, and went back into the tax. At that point they probably got tossed on the scrapheap, but it's a bit simplistic to say that the Jazz "never" intended to use them.

You're 100% bang on with the rest of your post, though.
