The worst pick we can end up with is the 9th, and we have about a 26% chance of moving up.

So let me get this straight, we're either going to have a 7.6% or 7.5% of winning the lottery, and the "coin flip" basically is for that .1%? Pretty disappointing, Tyreke Evans is a (Please Use More Appropriate Word) lol.

The coin flip will be to see if we are slotted #5 or #6.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

So the coin flip is done tomorrow?

Since we lost the flip last year odds say we will win it this year. Tails never fails!

Actually the odds say we have a 50/50 chance.

Yes, we have basically a 7.6% or 7.5% of winning the #1 pick in the lotto, but about a 26% chance of getting into the top 3. And in the event that neither we, nor the kings move up, the coin flip decides who drafts in front of one another.

So despite it's influence on the lotto odds (very small) it's actually a very big deal.

In theory, yes. But only if we lose the flip and then the Kings draft the guy we are targeting.

Or if we look to trade the pick, I suppose it would have more value.

The difference in one position when you are this close to the top of the draft is extremely significant. Stats overwhelmingly show that the higher you pick, the better odds you have of getting a star player. Moving from the 6 spot to the 5 spot is giving yourself 16% better chance of getting the player you want/better player, that is very significant, not just in theory.

I agree that you that we have a better chance of getting a higher quality player with the 5th pick than the 6th pick, and I want to win that coin toss, it is to the Jazz advantage.

However for argument and discussion sake, let's say we lose the coin toss and the lottery plays out with no one moving up, so the Kings pick 5th and we pick 6th. Let's say the top 4 picks are gone (Irving, Williams, Barnes, Kanter just for this example). The Kings are on the clock. If they take a guy that we wouldn't have taken in that spot, the 1 draft spot does not matter. If they take the player we wanted and we have to fall back to plan B, then yes it has a huge impact.

It all depends on the Kings and Jazz individual draft boards. If they take Kemba and we would have taken Knight, who cares, we get our guy anyway. But if we would have taken Kemba and lost out on him due to the coin flip, then it becomes significant.

That's a long response I know...let's just win the coin flip and not worry about it, cool? Cool

When does the coin flip happen? Historically it's been around this weekend. Anyone know?

Does anyone know how the coin toss is handled? I would doubt they fly out team reps to witness. Does David Stern just have one of his minions do it and then notify the teams?

I think it should be a rock-paper-scissors 2 out of 3 battle between Favors and Cousins. Or they could have a player from each team play each other in Horse. Would be more entertaining than receiving from an email from the league offices.

Problem with that is I think Cousins would bring actual scissors.

And then complain when Evans takes the scissors away and won't give them back?

I hate it when the Jazz are always not lucky when it comes to draft lottery slots. Watch us move down again when next month.

I hate Kobe. He misses that shot, we get the 5th pick no questions. The Kings make one more free throw down the stretch, we win the 5th pick. Sure, the Kings come back from 20 down in that last game was improbable but they had it. It was or should have been destiny to be the fifth pick.

That night was so frustrating: I checked in on the Washington game and they were up in the 4th with 3 minutes to go, and lost by 7. We could have been flipping the coin today for 4th. That was so huge!

Cursed.... NO.... Portland is cursed: Oden, Bowie, Roy etc.

But we aren't lucky.
