Worst trade in franchise history?

Post#1 » by babyjax13 » Thu Nov 3, 2011 5:50 am

I know there are a lot of them (and this topic has been beaten to death, but my excuse is "the lockout"), but I never even realized that Bernard King ever played for the Jazz.

September 11, 1980: Traded by the Utah Jazz to the Golden State Warriors for Wayne Cooper and a 1981 2nd round draft pick (Ken Green).

The right to the draft pick that ended up being Magic Johnson for a washed-up has-been (Gail Goodrich, I think).

June 29, 1982: Dominique Wilkins was Drafted by the Utah Jazz in the 1st round (3rd pick) of the 1982 NBA Draft.

September 2, 1982: Dominique Wilkins was traded by the Utah Jazz to the Atlanta Hawks for John Drew and Freeman Williams.

I can't be mad at that trade simply because if the Jazz don't get the money they did the franchise would have folded.

This wasn't technically a trade. The NO Jazz signed Goodrich as a free agent. League rules at the time required the signing team to compensate the team who lost the free agent. The Jazz agreed to send a number of picks to the Lakers, including the one that would end up (a few years later) being used on Magic.

In a strange coincidence, one of the other "compensation" picks was used (after being traded to Boston) to draft Freeman Williams.

I remember hearing this trade on the radio and thinking "AND"...I was a young teenager thinking that is a terrible trade for the Jazz! It was mainly done for the money, but it seems that the Jazz could have gotten the same money plus better young talent if they were more patient. Broke Jazz owner made a knee jerk reaction for a million bucks.
Top 4 seed in the West!!! Guaranteed!!!
