Should NBA players start their own league?

Post#1 » by conartist » Thu Nov 17, 2011 5:26 pm

I thought this was interesting: http://bit.ly/sQLKzQ

I don't completely agree with everything he says, but I love reading about radical ideas for this stupid lockout. Both sides are completely preoccupied with talking about how to split the revenue and no one is talking about how to increase revenue.

Yeah, and make 20% of current salaries so they can pay for their own arenas instead of citizens building them for billionaires to watch millionaires play in. Biggest heist in America.

The players don't have the skills to develop a league, and if they hire lawyers to manage they will simply be working for somebody else. Their egos will not allow everybody to make the same for regular season and more for performance. The performance incentives would make the games be like the crap exhibitions they have been playing across the country. These would be unwatchable for a season's worth of games.

 ha ha ha Worst idea ever! It would be like watching a 9 or 10 year old trying to run a multi billion dollar corporation. It would make a hilarious reality show tho.

Leave the players to playing basketball and the owners running the business.

Just because they are athletes doesn't mean they're dumb.

In larry millers book "driven", he refers to Michael Jordan wanting to do this exact thing. He knew the players had no idea what it took to run the nba

The players could set up a set of schedules and pick teams, and hire people to run it. Problem is that without the tv packages, the corporate boxes to sell, making commisions off of the parking and food. They would make a 10th of what they make now. This league would be bankrupt in a hurry.

The funniest part is if they had to rent the nba stadiums from the owners so the owners would get paid either way.

When it comes to a business as complicated as running the NBA they are dumb as doornails. If it was so easy to do do'nt you think it would have been done a long time ago?

There reasons why athletes are athletes and business man are business man is because that's their natural ability. Look at all the form players that try to make it as coaches or Gms and they hardly ever work out.

The players will not try to start their own league.

Can you imagine a player buying a team for $300Million....and risking his wealth? They would be liable for so much....will never happen.

It is easier to just count the money from the guaranteed contract and play ball.

I agree with this. Some of them are dumb because they're athletes, but most of them are just dumb by coincidence.

Much better said : )

I think I've made it clear that a league they started on their own would be doomed to failure, but it's not for the reasons many of you cite. Yes, there are money issues, but the players have enough monetary value to hire people to straiten out the mess. The issue is the quality of the product; with the players in control there is a much higher likelihood that it just becomes glorified street-ball, at which point most will stop watching. Owners have more incentive to put a 'proper' basketball product on the floor and that's because it is the only way to win games consistently.

The NBA would be back by the time a new league could be started.

And no one can compete with the NBA.

This article sums up why the players aren't ever going to manage anything--not even themselves.
