Jazz still considering adding player development coach

The Jazz are still considering adding a player development coach, The Salt Lake Tribune has learned.
Utah coach Tyrone Corbin is currently backed by assistants Sidney Lowe, Scott Layden and Jeff Hornacek.

Corbin has often said he's open to adding a big-man coach that could aid the development of second-year forward Derrick Favors. Meanwhile, rookie Enes Kanter would especially benefit from an experienced coach who could push him during practices, building up his game and strengthening his confidence.

The timing of the hire initially hinged upon the NBA lockout ending. Now that the work stoppage is close to being over and training camp could start Dec. 9 for a compressed 66-game season, the Jazz are still interested in adding a fifth coach.

However, the official schedule has not been released, and Utah wants to first examine the four-month regular-season calendar — specifically the amount of available practice and off days versus back-to-backs — before moving on the hire. Ideal candidates will also have to be on the market and available to take the job on short notice.

Adding a big man coach should be a no-brainer. We are investing a lot in Favors and Kanter and they are a huge part of our future. I think they need to add a bigs coach to make sure these guys come along and develop properly.

IMO the "big man coach" is gonna hafta be jefferson or okur. this year will have virtually NO practice time between games. the veteran players (of the league) will be relied upon far more than the assistant coaches, though the young legs will be the wheels the power their teams forward.

In a way I think the shortened season could mean you need more coaches. You're not going to have as many opportunities for the head coach to run through formal practice with the whole team, but I have to think there's still a lot of time for one-on-one sessions with individual players, even if it's just talking on the plane or on the bench.

I wish they would just go out and hire someone but I understand why they're waiting to see how much practice time they're going to have. It doesn't make much sense to bring in a fifth coach if he's hardly going to be able to work with them.

In essence, our young guys lost a seasons' worth of practice time.

Meh. I'd rather have Paul Mokeski. Coaches need communication skills and passion for helping others. Karl seems more like a motivational speaker than a teacher.

What evidence do we have that he would be a bad coach? At the very least I think he could be great for our bigs conditioning.

I think for Kanter, Memo is a great mentor. They are from the same culture and Kanter respects Memo. I think Memo can teach him how to be a good offensive player in tthe league. Favors though probably needs a development coach.

There are some things we just don't know as non-professionals and the quality of specialty assistant coaches is probably one of them. Its not like former all stars have a great track record of coaching success.

Well when it really comes down to it, its up to the players ability and a wanting to get better and use the natural abilities to their advantage. Was Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, John Stocked Clide Drexler, Wilt Chamberlin coached on how to want to get better or improve. THEY wanted to get better and improve their game. I think our Jr. Jazz team is going to show that want to get better. We have 4 players that were drafted with in the last two years in the top 12 that are going to be going at each other to get playing time. I think who ever we bring in will be fine its up to our players to catch on to what is being taught.
