SALT LAKE CITY—
After more than 50 years without a major facelift or reconstruction, the old Salt Lake City International Airport is being demolished and an entirely new one will go up.

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker made the announcement Tuesday evening during his State of the City address.

"It is a massive undertaking by virtually anyone’s standards, it is a $1.8 billion project" says Becker.

The project will be phased in with demolition and reconstruction happening over a period of 8 to 10 years.

kinda exciting. but over 10 years, the excitement wont be so much, mostly added stress i imagine. ive always wanted a kind of tram system to go underneath the tarmac between the "spokes." but a whole new one, well, i wonder what it will be like?

Why don't they just expand? The SLC is one of the most unique airports in the country....

Man, it feels like they just finished all the construction around the parking lots. I guess it is time to renovate the buildings now.

They clearly need to add at least 3 more Cinnibuns to get to national standards.

Will this be the first major hub to get this treatment in the Ultra-Security era?

The new plans call for 50% more space for frisking toddlers and photographing Jason Chaffetz's junk via backscatter X-ray.

My only serious complaint about the SLC airport is the awful commuter terminal.

Is this 1.8B in tax dollars?

sltrib wrote:The overhaul also would need annual budget approval from the City Council. The city would not pay the bill, though. Airlines would cover about $300 million in bonds for the project, Riley said, while passenger fees and fee-backed bonds would pay the largest share of the rest. Those fees already are maxed out at $4.50 per passenger flight segment, so they would not change unless Congress approves an increase.

The airport, which is debt-free, also has $250 million in reserve from previous passenger fees. Other funds would come through federal grants and rental-car fees.

Hey! Some of us like the nuances of the ghetto...

As far as municipal services having a hub is a major economic driver both durectly and indirectly. So while the answer is no its a priject that wiuld be worthy of bonds.
