I don't think that the question is whether Jefferson is our best player or not. Jefferson yes our best (or second best) player. But we know his limits, thus he is not a player to make Utah a contender team.
But now because of him and Milsap Favours and Kanter do not take enough time which is necessary for their development, and as a side-effect he is undermining Utah's future.
It is not something against Jefferson, but to make Utah a better team next year, Jefferson must go. Trading with good guards is the right solution if possible, if not even for nothing he sould go before the deadline.
