It would have been the trade of the decade for Portland.
First overpays (really, really overpays) him, trying to make us match the offer. It didnt work.
Second trade him back to the Jazz.
Its almost a joke if you think about it.

as i like wes, he's a bit overpaid, and i wouldn't pay a check for a team that stole us a player with paul allen's money. Let the jailblazers with their cap problems, maybe Batum will come...

Now the Jazz not only lose a sizable portion of their trade exception and a future draft pick, they add Wes' salary of $6.5 for 2012-13, $6.9 for 2013-14, and $7.2 for 2014-15--and have to find time for Wes, Burks, and Hayward. Not to mention Matthews' struggles of late.[/quote]
True.
But I still would like Matthews.....if Portland is tweaking and lets him go for a small price. He scored about 16ppg last year......this year not-so-good, but that is when you get a good young player at a discount.+956+
If we are lucky enougth to get .....they will have to spilt time with Gordon and Burks. No problem. It is ok to have a 3rd good wing.
Burks is 50-50 to be better than Matthews? Will he score 16ppg?

My guess is that the Jazz will never use the full Okur trade exception anyway. Not saying that they should spend it on Mathews, but someone in that price range would make the most sense, if they can give the Jazz what they need. That being said it is certainly nice to see Haywards and Burks development of late.

Mathews is in his third year, so he is still pretty young, and his struggles have been minimal. Especially compared to something like the drop off we have seen in Raja from his prime.

Re: Rumored Deal: Matthews back to the Jazz
I'm not arguing that Matthews is not worth his salary--because that is not the cost you have to pay. You have to give up all but about $3 mill of the trade exception and a future draft pick for the privilage of paying Matthews his salary. Is that really what you want to do with the trade exception? A $3 mill trade exception is pretty useless as salary that small is not usually worth trading in a separate transaction. AND you don't know what a $10 mill trade exception might land you this offseason or on draft day. I still say you wait. If nothing else works out maybe you can still get Matthews without having to burn all your assets to also acquire Felton.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but i remember matthews played for only 1 season for the Jazz, and he was signed as a non-drafted player. Therefore, when his contract was up, he was not a RFA, and Jazz had no means of matching the offer Blazers made.

No, the Jazz could have matched any offer up to the MLE, which is what Matthews received.....
They just chose not to match, and made the right decision......

Matthews struggles haven't really been 'minimal'. He has CJesque numbers. I bet most of you haven't really even looked.. I was shocked how poor they are. And he's had half a normal season games wise without snapping out of it.
