Sounds right. People who think Harris was worth a pick in addition to Williams are way over-valuing Devin.

Viewed from the perspective of two teams trading overpaid rotation players, the Jazz are taking on one more year of salary while the Hawks get an expiring. That's the primary reason some people (me included) thought there should be another pick involved heading the Jazz's way.

I thought the trade was fair value. This was a straight up positional trade. We need Marvins spot up shooting and above avg defense. We needed a SF badly.

Harris was redundant on our team.

We now have a very tall lineup.

I see your point. But I also see a bad market for trading Harris in the first place whether he is expiring or no. Especially when there were a lot of point guard options out there when the trade was announced. Williams is about a good as it gets for someone like Harris, and I don't think the Jazz really look at Williams as a rental.

I think they see Williams as a long term role player whose contract, though somewhat expensive now, still doesn't harm their long term flexibility. When you look at next year's crop of free agents, the extra year on his contract isn't as shabby a some might think now.

Surprised how mature and humble he sounded.

Kinda got a Raja Bell personality vibe from him for some reason, weird (just a intuitive tick on my part)

I had to read through a lot of garbage, but I pulled this out of the Hawk fan's site. Enjoy and respond if you would like.

Hawks fan here
Marvin is a good solid player, he just never lived up to his potential (Doesn’t help that CP3 and D-Will were drafted after). He’s definitely not an “elite” defender, average to good is a better description. He can hit the wide open threes but he could be much better if he would drive to the basket more. He’ll have 3-4 games a season where you’ll say why doesn’t he play with this intensity and heart all year. Good luck to you guys and I hope he can come around in Utah.
Hawks fan here.
I think you guys are going to be pleased with Marvin.
His biggest problem in ATL was perception, from being drafted in the number two spot.
He was also the fourth or fifth option in offensive “sets”. In an ISO heavy O, Marvin was always a bit lost in the shuffle.
Upside is his stellar D and ability to hit the open, corner 3. He is a good rebounder and has a good work ethic.
Downside is an inability to create his own shot and a lack of body control when driving to the hoop.
If you can get Marvin moving without the ball, he certainly has the ability to finish around the hoop, as well as shoot the open J. His shooting form is excellent and he has good fundamentals. He is also a career 80%+ free-throw shooter.
His ball handling ability would make it unlikely that you would want to see him log any time at the 2 spot, but his length can allow him to cover some 4’s in the league.
This trade is a win-win from my perspective. It gives Marvin a fresh start, where he might be better utilized and it gives the Hawks some flexibility in perusing free agents in 2012-2013, particularly Dwight Howard.
Haha.
He can be ok in the right system. I think he might fit in better there.
I knew trading Joe wasn’t the last move. I don’t know what happened to Marvin after he signed his deal. His game just disappeared mysteriously. Oh well. Now we have our backup PG. Next move….
Great day to be a Hawks fan...
While we may be worse in the short-term, we now have the flexibility to do some awesome things.
Marvin will be a good fit for you guys.
Give him time and he can hit a three, never lived up to his billing as a lottery pick, a good defender. In my opinion he needed a change of scenery and SLC is the absolute opposite of Atlanta. So it could actually good for him in the long run.
For what it's worth I hope Marvin hits his stride with them
It was never his fault that he got drafted #2 or that he signed for an average of $8M. I didn’t like that he spent so much time working on a degree rather than his game, but I think new scenery and a new coach can get more out of him (and he was already a 15 PER). And I agree with their posters that they acquired Mo Williams and had a PG logjam. Marvin should help them and they were already pretty good. Look for Marvin to drain threes off their low post offensive game. Good move for both teams.

and with a larger role asked and better coaching, who knows what happens with him
And on a contract year
guy’s going to play hard.
HERE IS WHAT IT MEANS:
NO MARVIN WILLIAMS
Nothing else matters.
I just don't know about this deal
Doesn’t make much sense to me, honestly.
except in this case we are getting a better player back lol
It's not like it's a pure salary dump
Harris is making $8.5 this year. Marvin did have the player option for $7.5 million, which he would likely have exercised, but it’s not like Marvin was some pariah who didn’t produce at all. He’s a guy who’s going to get paid $5 million to play somewhere, fairly easily, and for a good coach, he could do fairly well. He’s a solid defender, a go all around shooter, and still has some athletic ability. In return, we got a guy who’s going to steal minutes from our good young point guard and gives us something of a traffic jam in terms of point guard minutes next year.
I guess we’re doing everything possible to clear up salary room for 2013, but this deal doesn’t scream “Win” to me.
Marvin is without question the better player
We got worse defensively, and Marvin produced the same as Devin last year offensively. That said you do this trade for the free agent sweepstakes next season
Quick breakdown
Harris is able to play SG or PG and can create his shot. He’s expiring, so it gets Marvin Williams off the cap. Means we can try to land 2 max free agents next summer or we can maintain Josh and Jeff’s rights and still go after 1 max free agent. At the minimum we can maintain a core of Jeff, Josh, and Al had have room to build on it.
For Utah they get a SF who might thrive in their system with their strong low post scoring creating open jumpers and they have a PG logjam.
We don't need a small forward.
Go with bare essentials and tank gracefully as you can and we’ll build this thing fool proof.
Utah's bloggers think they got the better deal
For them it was a better deal
They got rid of Devin Harris, who by the way hasn’t been good since that breakout half season in New Jersey with Vince Carter, and got a shooter in Marvin Williams in which they desperately needed. And if you’re talking player for player, they still got the better deal. It was only a better deal for us in the regard that we’re clearing cap space for next summer.
I’m actually going to miss MarvinRegarless of Money
Harris for Marv straight up is a steal
He still had a better season than Marv
And he fits into our team either as a starting guard or a 6th man. Marv never had a true role for the Hawks. I think he’ll do better with the Jazz but Harris is still the more valuable piece for us.
I'm wishing Marvin greener pastures.
I don’t think he was ever a good fit here. I think in the right system, with a good coach, that Marvin can be a solid second option on somebody’s squad and he is still an excellent defender.
I 100% agree
Hopefully he will find his confidence again in Utah

Marvin's a good guy, He may not be your leader or go to guy, but might make a good spokesperson for your tv/radio crew. I hope he does well over there. Here's him with the new uni if any of you hadn't seen it';

And we still have a logjam at PF and C. But my guess is KOC will wait until the trade deadline to see how we're doing recordwise and also how Kanter and Favors develop. Wish he didn't though.

How is it a guarantee he's on the team next year? He might not pick up his option and if he does he's an expiring contract that's tradeable if he does.

That's a good point. I just think pure cap space next season will be a lot more valuable than an 8 million expiring. With the new CBA kicking in, teams over the luxury tax will be desperate to shed salary.
Looking at all the possibilities:
If Marvin has a great season and opts in, great. He won't be overpaid at 8 million.
If he opts out, we'll still have the same cap space if we hadn't traded for him.
If he plays poorly and opts in, he's an expiring who can be valuable. This is the worst case scenario though.
If he plays poorly and opts out, we still have the same cap space prior to the trade.

After thinking a little more about it, it was a pretty good move by KOC.

marvin's salary is a bit less than Devin's, and has some bonuses (not likely to happens)

I think KOC is just waiting for the right value, because we aren't in a hurry to trade (worst case next year we'll have a ton of cap space) and both Sap and Al are good players, big guys, and expiring contracts.

I'd also be happy if we extend the contract of Millsap for the right price (Bass just signed a 3year 20millions), he showed versatility

Millsap is an badly undersized PF and you think he can play minutes as a Center?

"emergency" center... also in the playoff i saw Bass, Lebron, Haslem, Brand, etc etc play some mins in small ball lineups

I think this is a wonderful pick up for both teams. Harris never fit well with Utah, and this will give him a fresh start, as opposed to being traded mid season to a team he had no idea how to work with, only to go into a lockout and have even less time to gel. Marvin will finally get a team he would connect well with, and a chance to actually flourish as a scorer, not just a defender.
