Jazz "slow-playing" Favors to limit his extension demands?
Do you think the Jazz have been intentionally limiting Favors' minutes to reduce the amount he could reasonably demand from his first contract extension (for which he's eligible this summer)?

Re: Jazz "slow-playing" Favors to limit his extension demand
No, simply Corbin is limiting Favors bc he doesnt want to have team strife from Millsap and Big Al. He thinks benching them in a contract year will cause too much disruption. I actually think Corbin rather play Favors over Big Al and Millsap, but thinks all hell would break loose (ala Bell situation) if he did that.
GM really could help out Corbin by finally making a deal getting rid of Millsap or Big Al or both.

I like to be optimistic in thinking that the Jazz are simply keeping Jefferson and Millsap's trade value as high as possible in an effort to get the best possible deals for them by the deadline.

Thats exactly why, I agree 100%.
Plus all Favors gotta do is show the contracts Mcgee and Jordan got to the Jazz FO, look at them with a serious face and say nothing. He doesn't even need his agent with him. The FO will say "Fine you got a point, you win".

Re: Jazz "slow-playing" Favors to limit his extension demand
I wish I could believe that. It would at least make a very small portion of sense to my brain. But I can't give him that much credit.
And let's be honest. With the market for big men, and the vacuum that will be created this summer with the abundance of salary cap dollars and the lack of talent....its going to be ugly. If Derrick was a free agent to be this year, he would get maxed out. I fully believe that. His agent is not stupid. He's worth 9-10 million a year where he is currently at, and the promise of improvement is enough to get him to at least 13m per season. I would be shocked if he took less than 12m in an extension. Just look at Serge Ibaka. He took 12m per season in an extension, and then watched as Roy Hibbert--a player he is clearly better than--got max money, not to mention DeAndre Jordan and Javale McGee.
No, Derrick is getting paid and he knows it. We should focus our efforts on making him an easy max guy instead of a borderline one. That's where you get the real return on investment.

the thought occurred to me a long while back. i think they do it for many reasons, and one of them is that they can afford to. but the bottom line is it doesn't matter how much money he is going to ask from the jazz, what matters is what amount of money other teams will offer him. the jazz will have to compete against other teams for favors' services. and we already saw with wesley matthews (24 mins vs favors 22) that players can get big offers even if they don't play a lot.

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

these players played much better during their contract years than Favors.
All of them a great shot blockers. More athletic than Derrick.
I would even trade McGee to Favors. Easily.

that's blasphemy.
favors have big al and millsap play ahead of him - both are savvy vets who were deserving of allstar considerations at various points in their carerr. macgee can't beat kosta koufos for the starting spot. denver drastically overpaid him. they now have an 11M a year bench player who plays 19 minutes a game and can't beat koufos or mozgov for a starting spot. and that's before we even to discuss the personality and ability differences.

Re: Jazz "slow-playing" Favors to limit his extension demand
People around the league aren't stupid... they all know that Favors is going to demand big money... and his agent knows this too. No matter how limited his minutes are this year he's still going to demand big money. Look at what Asik got from the Rockets... he wasn't getting many minutes and he wasn't producing that much before then but they know what they were getting when they paid him that money. You can't keep really good players a secret in this league, even if they get buried by veterans minutes.

Re: Jazz "slow-playing" Favors to limit his extension demand
Slow playing the rookies does limit their value.
Yes, Favors is getting paid. But he's not getting max right now. If we was playing 34 minutes a night and putting up big numbers, he'd be asking for max money.
Plus, it keeps the trade value of the vets high. It's a win-win for the Jazz, and a lose for Favors.

Hibbert is much bigger, and those blocks an rebounds play into that great big center thing he has going.
Yes, Favors is getting paid. But he'd be getting paid more if he played more minutes.

They don't have any trade value IMO. That is past. Teams won't give up assets for guys that they can sign in the offseason. The only guys we will get for them are guys teams want to dump that have multiple years like Bargnani.
You guys really want them? I dont
