Sloan Passes Away

Post#1 » by Crunch 99 » Fri May 22, 2020 3:10 pm

RIP Jerry. I was fortunate to attend many Jazz games during your era. You will always be admired for being a fierce, no nonsense competitor who steadfastly brought it day in and day out over twenty years of coaching.

Longtime Jazz coach Jerry Sloan dies at age 78

Snips:
Jerry Sloan will always be synonymous with the Utah Jazz. He will forever be a part of the Utah Jazz organization and we join his family, friends and fans in mourning his loss," the team said in a statement. "We are so thankful for what he accomplished here in Utah and the decades of dedication, loyalty and tenacity he brought to our franchise.

"... Like [John] Stockton and [Karl] Malone as players, Jerry Sloan epitomized the organization. He will be greatly missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Tammy, the entire Sloan family and all who knew and loved him.

Sloan was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009 after a 26-year coaching career, 23 of them with the Jazz. His no-nonsense style blended perfectly with Hall of Fame players Malone and Stockton, leading to 15 straight playoff appearances. The Jazz's nearly unstoppable pick-and-roll offense resulted in Western Conference titles in 1997 and 1998, but Utah lost each time to the Bulls, the team Sloan played for and coached.

Condolences to his family and loved ones......

He designed, along with his assistants (have to give them credit) one of the most brilliant systems that could take any player and make him a contributor......

Really sad news.

He was one of the two men I respected and admired most in my life. The other one was my uncle, who passed away a few years ago.

I loved his work ethic, always cared about others more than himself, never asked for the credit of anything. Incredibly humble.

Rest in peace Sloan.

Regards,

RIP
Humble to a fault, tough, hard worker. Everything people in Utah (and elsewhere) value in a cranky old man. He was a good person, and it is sad he is gone.

I was ambivalent about resuming the season but suddenly I want to see the Jazz play in the worst way. Hard to see a legend leave the stage. RIP Jerry.

R.I.P to one of the top 5 coaches in NBA history in my opinion. Condolences to his family and loved once. Sloan made Stockton to Malone fun to watch and very difficult to defend. It's a shame he was fired and couldn't finish coaching another 5 or so years.

He resigned actually. In the middle of a season. Almost in the middle of a game. He always did things his way, and very rarely flexed very far.

This was probably his strongest personality attribute, (at least publicly,) which could be viewed as both a weakness and a strength. But it is bad form to badmouth the recently deceased. He was a good human being and taught many a person how to be better also.

RIP Jerry.

Sad news. Sloan was such an integral part of the Jazz and defined the franchise for so long. Great coach, humble guy, tough as nails, and the coiner of the immortal phrase "jackpotting around" which I still use from time to time. A true basketball giant. He is already missed. My condolences to his family.

And man, this season just keeps getting worse and worse.

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

Sad news and at the same time probably a bit of relief. My grandma had dementia which by the end had completely destroyed the mind of what used to be an incredibly smart and erudite person. It was heartbreaking to watch her deteriorate and lose her what seemed like piece by piece as her mind went and that was probably harder to handle for our family than her passing a couple of years ago.

RIP coach! And condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.
