OT: RealGM's best food of SLC - Burrito

Post#1 » by jazzfan1971 » Mon Apr 26, 2010 6:31 pm

Lots of good burritos out there. But the one near and deal to my heart is the smothered burrito from La Puente/La Luna.

I get one of those at least once a month. Probably more.

As far as the rest of the fare at La Puente/La Luna goes, I'm very unimpressed. They are a one trick pony in my book. But, that one trick is a good one.

I actually loved the Burritos from Taco Del Mar before they went out of business. As it is now I like Cancun Cafe, Cafe Rio (some days), and if I'm feeling frugal I go with the 1/2 pound red burritos at Del Taco

Lone Star Taqueria

They are famous for the tacos, but their burritos are great too!

JazzFan, you can take your kid there too! Ft. Union and like 1500 East or so.

I make no claims that it is authentic or anything, but I like their steak burritos.

Of course, truth be told, I've never had much of a discerning palette (sp?)

Calling a burrito non-authentic is like calling a sandwich non-authentic. If it is a tortilla rolled full of edible stuff it's a burrito.

Alright people, here's my 2 cents...

If you want more authentic mexican burritos, then go Beto's it is!

If you want good burritos but not really authentic mexican, then go to places like Barbacoa, Lone Star, Baja Fresh or La Salsa.

For Smothered burritos you can't go wrong with Cafe Rio or La Puente.

The best Mexican of all is Red Iguana, but you don't get burritos there, you get a Mole'.

There, now 3 of my recommendations have been on Drive Ins Diners and Dives. Lone Star, Red Iguana and Moochies. Do Breakfast next JazzFan so I can do the other 2 Utah restaurants on that show!

Red Iguana is #1 for Mexican, but for a burrito I'm going with Betos.

I've been to Red Iguana 3-4 times. Never been that impressed. Although the bulletholes in the plate glass lent it a dangerous feel.

La Frontera order of three smothered burritos is the best value and best tasting in SLC. Best Chili Verde too. Eat one burrito (if you can), then take two home and freeze them for another meal! Hands down - best ever in SLC!!!!

I used to work in Draper. One day I decided to go try the Cafe Rio. The line literally went out the front door. After waiting in line for 20 minutes I got the privilege of waiting for a table.

All for what I thought was rather average food.

To be honest I couldn't figure out why all those other folks were there. Haven't been back since.

I do LOVE the Bajio Quesadilla though. I'm not sure the exact name. It's got a sweet onion and chicken filling. Yum.

I don't think I got the Mole at the Blue Iguana.

The best mexican I've ever had was in Logan. Not sure the name of the place, but, it was kinda southwesty mexican. Good date locale. I think I had some kind of chocolate/jalapeno mole type thingy. DELICIOUS. I'd be there all the time if it was in SLC.

I also enjoy Beto's now and then. But it's hard to justify eating something dripping oil that weighs 2lbs on a regular basis. I get the California burrito there. Pretty damn good, but, mucho unhealthy.

One of the worst mexican dishes I've ever had was in Mexico. I got beef tacos, but, they tasted like they were cooked in fish oil and ashtray. So much for authentic fare.

The absolute worst was Sophie Garcia's. I got a horrendous case of food poisoning there. I was going fire hydrant out of both ends. Not good.

Red Iguana is not the Blue Iguana! Blue Iguana is an impostor! FYI. But the bullet holes is the classic Red Iguana. There is a new fancier Red Iguana they opened too. The Loco Lizard at Kimball Junction has one mole, and it's pretty good. The rest of the menu is pretty pedestrian, but it's not bad.

El Chubasco is the place in Park City for locals to get good food at a reasonable price.

As long as you're ready for what comes out the other end, nothing beats late night Betos. I do like my Cafe Rio pork burritos though.

I do have to say that my all time favorite was La Unica in Logan. It has been gone for a while now, but they had cheap food that was amazing, perfect for the hungry high school kids, we would be in there all the time.

When I was in Logan I ate at a place on the south end of town. Ordered Goat Tacos. They were goatlicious.

La Frontera is damn good too. I'm also a fan of Mi Ranchito. Their burritos are smothered in red sauce and melted cheese. Like an assload of melted cheese.
