Trade with Minnesota
Pretty simple question - would you trade the #9 pick to Minnesota for their #16 and #23 pick? I'm not sure that I'm in love with our options @ #9 any more than what the Jazz could get a little later in the round. If we did that, I think that we could get some combination of Heyward, Babbitt, Bledsoe, Patterson or Motiejunas.
Would you do it - would Minny?

nope... I would trade up but not back unless all good centers were taking and we were able to get a decent big by moving back. I don't see the 2 picks helping a ton unless your building for the future. And even at that you are really hit and miss at both 16 and 23.

Re: Trade with Minnesota
Why, we need to improoved our 5th guy off the bench or something? At 9 we could be looking at a starter, 16 is not very likely, and 23rd much less.

We don't have enough cap room to add two guaranteed contracts that are rookies who may or (more likely) won't even pan out.

What teams are ahead of us that might want to move back?

I oppose moving back. There's a drop off right at 9.

The 16th pick AND Love or jefferson and I'd do it.

Re: Trade with Minnesota
hmm if that hassan whiteside kid is available at 16 maybe. Kid lead the ncaa in blocks 180+ in 34 games. damn!!! Although sounds as if he is a black hole on offense and not too smart. haha I think he might actually be the exact opposite of jarron collins.

No way Whiteside would be available at 16. Workouts can (and will) modify some of it, but this class have been scouted and monitored long and hard by now, probably more than most of them. Right now is pretty clear the whole thing should go somethink like:
- Wall, Turner, Cousins, Favors top 4
- Johnson, Aminu, Aldrich, Monroe, Udoh, Whiteside, Motiejunas 5 to 11
- Davis, Patterson, Henry will be seriously taken into account, but the levels of talent, potential in those 12 dudes is just too much
- There's been some talk recently about Babbit, but Im'n not buying into him being lottery player.
- Thabeet experience is too darn close for Alibi to broke any of the aforementioned names
- Guys I expect to climb some spots: Ebanks, Lawal (I'd take Lawal over Patterson, Davis any day if you need contribution right off the bat...)
Of course, just MHO as of today at this very time!

Funny guys.

It's actually about the same. If everyone got a 20% raise (not a given, the later the pick), the two picks cost about $490,00 more than the rookie scale for the higher pick. However, UTA still needs to fill the other roster slot, and a min salary is $473,000.
I was curious, since a Jazz fan stopped by the board this morning and said you guys would outbid IND, where many want to trade the #10 for #16 + #23. Obviously, it all comes down to the perceived difference in talent between 10 and 16. If the two prospects have a big gap, then the #23 wouldn't fill it.
Thanks for the thread.

Re: Trade with Minnesota
They can fill the roster with NBDL league guys dishing out 10 day contacts and it turns out be a lot lower than the $473,000. Those players also aren't guaranteed to take up a spot and money for two or three years like draft picks.
#9 pick will start at $1.9 mil a year.
#16 and #23 combined start at $2.3 mil a year.
With as tight as the Jazz are, $.5 mil is a big deal.
In this years draft the difference between 9 and 16 is signficant.

Teams can't give out 10-day contracts until January, while roster minimums begin when the season opens.

My mistake on that then. I would still rather sign a guy to a one year minimum. That way it doesn't tie up a roster spot and more money over two years.
