Rudy Gay??

Post#1 » by JAZZ_FTW » Fri May 21, 2010 12:21 am

Here is a restricted free agent that i would love to try and get. What would it take to sign him and not have Memphis match? I'm thinking 4 year 35 mill, starting around 8 mill might be enough. I realize that would keep us from resigning booz but I think we let Korver walk and then try and sign a big like Heywood for roughly the same amount as Gay. Let Millsap start and have Memo come off the bench as a back up. I think we could get Eddie House relatively cheap (3 mill) to be the backup to Dwill and move Ronnie Price to the 3rd PG.

I think this would give us a ton of options with AKs contract as well. We could definately try and trade him before the deadline or keep him as a great expiring of our own to go after a big name next summer. One of the big ones could be David West if he opts out.

This years lineup

Dwill, House, Price
Matthews, CJ
Gay, AK
Millsap, Okur, Koufus
Heywood, Draft, Fes

This would give us a lot of options for matchups to go big or small as well as have a decent offensive bench. What do you guys think?

We don't have cap space.

Barring a trade our only additions will be Matthews at more salary and our draft choice. Any other adds will need to be rookies or minimum contracts, since Matthews will come out of our MLE.

Rudy will be using your Clippers, your Wolves, your (ahem) Knicks, and other smaller players in the market for his offer sheet.

I think someone is going to overpay Rudy Gay by A LOT this summer.

Exactly--the best you can do is the mid-level exception (starting around $5.8 mill or so). And then that would jeopardize your ability to sign Matthews.

Its a fun idea.

He would be a HUGE roll of the dice. He would be great or a huge bust. Jerry and the Jazz system could possibly be just what he needs, or he could hate it and do horrible here. I actually would like to try it if we could possibly get him for the MLE.

I think he is going to get the MLE from someone, and not more. We could use the bi level on Wes.

Rudy Gay will get $50-$70M this summer. One of the ESPN analysts listed him as the #4 commodity in the off-season ahead of Stoudamire and Boozer. I think he is ahead of Boozer but not Stoudamire.

Yep. Like I said, someone is going to overpay for Gay. It won't be Rashard Lewis bad, but similar.

I've never really understood why many people likes Gay that much. I watch him and I see an average basketball player with average basketball IQ. May be I'm blind or something, but he's a role player in my eyes.

I just read up on the rules of the CBA for free agent signings.

As far as I now understand it we can resign booz and korver because of bird rules but since we are over the cap we can only use the mid level exception to sign someone else. This includes Matthews because he has only played with us for one year.

So our summer options are:

sign booz or try a sign and trade.
Sign korver or try a sign and trade.
Spend the MLE (roughly 5.5-6 mill) divided up between who ever we get. Most likely Matthews will get ost of it.
Sign fes (qualifies as an early bird which means we can match any offer he recieves).

Sounds like we're screwed unless KOC can pull something out his dark hole.

Add the possibility to use our trade exceptions to add players without sending someone out in return.
Here are the trade exceptions and when they expire:
Matt Harpring $6,500,000 22nd December 2010
Eric Maynor $1,318,920 22nd December 2010
Ronnie Brewer $2,717,161 18th February 2011

And the Jazz have their Bi-Annual exception ($1.99 mill) for signing a free agent.

The only way to get him here in Utah would be through a sign and trade and I can't see the Jazz being open to giving up AK for him.

If you could get him here and keep our main pieces in place while doing it I would take a look at it. Having RG and AK running around on the same team would be killer.

Hypothetically, the jazz still have about $10M in trade exceptions they can use. The Jazz would have to give up something enticing enough to get him though. Not sure the Jazz have the pieces that the Griz would be looking for.
