Help! I don't understand!!!

Post#1 » by Montanajazz » Mon May 24, 2010 4:21 pm

Why can't the jazz trade Kirlinko for cap space and not re-sign Korver and Boozer and use the money they would have to sign multiple free-agents + resign Mathews? Is there a rule that prevents this? Can they not go over the say 65 mil max?????

They can't trade Kirilenko for cap space because teams with cap space want to spend their money wisely.

Because no team with enough cap space to absorb AK's contract will take him, when they have a chance at guys like Lebron, Wade or Bosh. And also, the Jazz without AK's contract are at about 40 million in salay. We wouldn't really be able to re-sign Matthews and multiple FA.

It is all related to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players union. Larry Coon does a great FAQ if you are interested in reading up: http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm

There is a thing called the salary cap. It's different from teh luxury tax.

You have to be under the salary cap to have cap room.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

AK really was only worth 6-7 mil per all these years. His fragile body,
his melt downs, his inconsistent shooting, etc.

I hope we've learned that we can't sign this type of player to a max deal anymore.

The jazz payed him his worth, after not knowing how we would be post john and karl. Then Ak has a breakout all star year where he filled the boxscore. He was worth it, but the jazz changed once they surrounded ak with better players then him. He just kinda fell off. It wasnt a bad idea to give him max at the time he was the star he was known as one of the best defenders in the league he was perhaps the best shot blocker in the league.

Well said. Plus AK has played incredibly well for his Russian team. He just isn't utilized in our system. Which is a shame.

Yes AK has played well against the inferior Euro talent. Unfortunately the top NBA teams don't use those players. With all his bball years he still features the chin high dribble on his drive to the basket.

AK might have been a star for his russian team, but he was still mostly a high-energy player with NBA experience who also happened to score a few more points and block/alter a few more shots. AK is a defender first, not a scorer, and Utah should've taken that fact into account when they signed him to a 7-year deal. If they had waited a year, they still would've been the frontrunner for paying top $$, and his deal would've been only 5 years. In other words, he'd already be done with his albatross of a contract, and Utah could've tried to re-sign him for the $7M or $8M or so that he is appropriately worth if they had wanted to.

In other words, Utah paid him more than his worth, and evidence of overpaying were available at the time of signing. Not even the Cinderella 2004 season was enough to justify his deal.

You mean the inferior talent like Dirk, right? When he guarded him in the championship game and destroyed him?

Dirk has never led his team to the title. He is a good player but not one I would build around. It really hasn't worked for Dallas in the playoffs.

I was talking about the german national team. There is plenty of good talent in the European Championships.

Overall the NBA is condsiderably higher talent wise. Many NBA bench dwellers and older players can still compete effectively there. Euro success does not necessarily translate to NBA success. Unfortunately, some of the bad habits AK picks up over there translate into turnovers here.

Ak has some basketball talent. He is just, not now or ever was, a maximum talent IMO.

Thanks captian obivious.

I am not talking about a Euro league team. I am talking about national teams that usually contain two or three NBA players. The German team has Dirk and Chris Kaman, the Spainish team with Jose Calderon, Gasol Brothers, Rudy F, Rubio, and other NBA'ers, the French team with Tony Parker, Turiaf, Diaw, and Batum.

Yeah, whoops.

I was going to list Ak's teammates but decided to go a different direction and didn't proofread, haha.

Ak was pretty much the only NBA'er on his Russian team unless you are going to count Sergie Monya or Victor Khryapa.
