OT: The New Mountain West?

Post#1 » by MeestR » Fri Jun 4, 2010 9:12 pm

Nothing that new, it's been on the news and radio for days or weeks. but has picked up some in the last few days. mainly around the big 12.

nebraska and missouri would go to the big 10.

texas tech, texas, texas a&m, oklahoma, oklahoma st., colorado, would all go to the PAC. (becoming a 16 team conference)

the 4 remaining schools are kansas, kansas state, baylor, and iowa state. those 4, with the addition of boise st., would make a great 14-team mountain west conference. that's some serious ball. football and basketball. probably a bigger deal basketball wise. personally, im hoping for it to happen, and say good-bye to the big 12.

Adding those for would put them ahead of the Big East in football and maybe the ACC.

The Mountain West could possible even change its name.

I think what SHOULD happen is a bunch of teams leave the Mtn West, join up with those Big 12 outcasts, add in Boise St. and form a new conference that doesn't have a stupid TV deal.

Well, the stupid TV deal becomes a lot more marketable with those teams added.

Looks like the MWC schools are screwed. If the P10 goes 16, I dont see why the B10, ACC and SEC wouldnt follow suit.

Personally I think this is terrible for college sports and football. 16 teams is just way too much.

That TV deal becomes a huge spike against people joining the MWC.

If all of this is true the best case scenario is for BYU, Utah, TCU and say SDSU, UNLV and whomever to create a new conference with Boise and whoever is leftover from B12(dont see it happening though).

All I want is an auto-bid to the Fiesta bowl, which with KU, KSU and maybe CU it's likely.

Looks like NEB to the Big10 is done.

CU is going to the PAC10 with the Tx, TxA&M, Tech, Ok, and OSU.

If MWC can add KU, KSU, BSU, ISU, and even maybe Baylor, that could be a good thing. According to the BCS, the Big12 will still have its auto berth into the BCS games. I bet Kansas bball would be pretty pissed about playing in the MWC though. They would crush almost every year without a doubt.

The MTN channel will become much more marketable. It will reach more of Texas, Kansas, and Iowa. They would also have a lot more money to invest into the channel and advertising would go up.

I think we'll see a new conference before Kansas joins the Mountain West.

It might be the Mountain West and Big 12 remainders merge to keep the auto bid and keep the infrastructure of a TV network. It's not a bad conference if they add Boise too. There are more BCS teams in that conference than would be in the Big East.

What is Kansas going to do? ND and MAYBE Texas can be independents. They may try to join the Big East but football rules and bball is secondary. The Big East already has a ton of teams too. While the Tx's schools are exactly Pacific Coast, they bring in a good number of them. Kansas sticks out like a sore thumb from the rest of the big east location wise. I guess they did allow South Florida in though.

Rumors are including Houston as well to the MWC. That adds a lot more tvs.

There will NOT be 5 autobids after all this conference realignment. I hope the good MWC schools join some others from the big 12 for a new conference with a good TV deal. They will have to work for an autobid though.

Exactly. They're not going to just give that bid away. There's already some talk of the not-yet-formed PAC-16 getting TWO automatic berths.

The new conference won't get 2 bids. That came from the AD of the school who will be losing a National Championship tomorrow. I did read that Missouri is being blamed and the left overs will not stand to be in a conference with Missouri anymore. If Missouri is left out of the Big 10, they could end up going to where the rest don't.

On an off topic question for this OT post.

From what I've heard, Michigan State is still a big fan of former Tom Izzo assistant and current Utes basketball head coach Jim Boylen, if the rumors are true that Izzo is heading to Cleveland, does MSU try to bring Boylen back, and what does that do for the Utes going into next season?

My understanding is that the contract for the way the BCS bowl bids is already structured and not up for renegotiation. That is why the MWC tried to get something together this last year. The other conferences will not let the PAC10 have 2 auto bids while they still only have one. They want that money too.

If Missouri doesn't go to the Big 10 (I don't see why they wouldn't at this point) and the others don't want Missouri in the same conference, Missouri is screwed. Where are they going to go? The WAC? They would have to beg the SEC or the ACC. Niether of them are going to let Missouri in. From what I took the Big 12 schools are upset with Neb, who bolted yesterday for the BIg 10. They feel Neb is the one that broke up the conference.

Anyone who thinks that anyone sans Boise is joining the MWC is crazy. Our TV deal is terrible. That alone is the reason why they wont join. It would be in BYU, Utah and TCU's best interest to form a new conference with the B12 leftovers and Boise/Houston. One criteria to be considered for an auto-bid is to have 6 teams that have been together for at least 5 years. If BYU, Utah and TCU take SDSU, UNLV and Air Force or New Mexico and adds in Kansas, K-state, Houston, Boise etc. Then they could still be up for auto-bid evaluation in a year or two.

I'd take New Mexico over Air Force.
