Nice to see this officially happen. Now the Jazz can test the market for their contract values.

And how must it suck for Boozer to be left out of the meeting of the "top 3". He had been talking about how he and Wade are friends and would love to play with him. But then Lebron, Wade, and Bosh are off planning their future and Boozer appears left out in the cold. He'll get plenty of attention from teams looking to sign him, but does anyone else get the feeling they are trying to build a "Lakers east" or the "new Celtics" (without the more balanced roster)? Assuming all 3 go to Miami--wouldn't they have to fill out that roster with minimum salary players? Chalmers, Jones, and Beasley are the only ones currently under contract--and they hold the rights to 2 rookies. Any other star players looking to take on the league minimum to play with them?

To those chiding Boozer in every way, every day: What gives with you? Boozer helped keep the Jazz near the top of the Western Conference for the past several years. How can you possibly find joy in belittling him ... or anyone else? If you don't like him for whatever reason, simply be happy he's gone and move on.

Well I know you aren't referring to me as I don't chide Boozer "in every way, every day". I do find it interesting to see the cliques even among the NBA elite and how people act when they believe they are one of the "popular kids" vs. when they obviously aren't in that group.

Back on topic, points of interest to me:
- Boozer is second choice for both Miami and "the big three" players
- Recent reports indicate Boozer has interest from many teams as they believe he can be had for less than the maximum (oh really....)
- If Boozer can be had for less than the maximum--or teams are less interested if they would have to give him the maximum--does that give Utah an edge to keep him? Utah has indicated that retaining him is their top priority this offseason. Is it better to keep chasing the sexy destinations when their interest is lower or stay with the known location where you are desired?

Based on my understanding of the cap, the Jazz can still negotiate with Matthews irrespective of the offer sheet they tendered. Furthermore, based on his status as a "Gilbert Arenas" player (free agent coming off non-rookie scale contract) the Jazz - or any other team - can offer him a contract that balloons in the third year. So they could do something like this:

$2M, $2M, $7M, etc.

Do you think the Jazz will try to negotiate a deal with Matthews or will invite some other team dictate the terms of his contract? What will Matthews do?

Seems the market price to sign CB will be about $13M to start (according to an ESPN source). The Jazz are the only team able to offer him six years. Thats about the number I had in mind, and Boozer provides value at that price if he stays relatively healthy.

It seems clear to me the Jazz are much worse off competitively if they let him walk; additionally, his contract will be an asset - just look at all the suitors he has now. If the Jazz have intentions to contend rather than illusions of contending, they will pay Boozer what he is worth- i.e., what the market will bear.

Teams were willing to pay Elton Brand and Chris Webber insane contracts when they were about to fall off a cliff. That doesn't mean that their teams should have matched that.

I think the Jazz should offer him a 6-year deal starting at $13M. That would mean annual raises of $1.365M (10.5%), with a total contract amount of (gulp) $98.5M.

If another team offered him a max 5-year deal it would likely start at $16.6M with $1.328M annual raises (8%), with a total contract amount of $96.3M.

If you're Carlos Boozer, which contract would you take?

In the West, I think Boozer is worth three years, $36 million. In the East, he should be worth three years, $42 million.

Boozer is not top 3 around the league but he is the #1 for the Jazz. Nuff said.

Jazz brass have to be nuts to commit almost 100M to Boozer... I'd certainly prefer to let him go and deal with the (supposed) decline in rebs and points...

I find little joy in belittling him.

And he's not gone--yet.

His defense is replaceable, and his offense can be compensated for. Utah now has decent scorers at 3 or 4 positions--without Boozer. If AK is healthy, then Boozer won't be missed.

I would beg to differ here. There are so many teams clearing space for one player (Lebron) that many teams will miss out and need to get someone and have tons of money to throw around. Some GM isn't going to be left looking stupid not getting anyone decent.

Don't get side tracked by the "big 3" the media hates Utah and loves to not recognize them if they can. Boozer is being talked about amoung the NBA GM's as a major fill no doubt about it. Speculation only shows ones desires not fact.

Espn has him rated as the 6th best FA of the off season. Somebody will over pay him.

whats their liist? Top 6? I stopped reading ESPN long ago because of their stupid pay to read internet articles.
