7/08 12:26pm - A new name being mentioned with the Jazz

Chris Mannix of SI has mentioned that Al Harrington is in talks with the Clippers, the Nets and the Utah Jazz.

First thought is that the Jazz would have to be the fall back option because the Jazz are the only team without cap space to sign Harrington.

Do we want Harrington in Utah? Harrington has been a productive NBA player who has always been misguided on what is role should be. Early in his career he was a strong 6th man for Indiana, then he wanted to be the man so he went to Atlanta and faltered as the go to guy.

Since then has played in Golden State and New York, two teams with very little structure to their offense. He fueded with Don Nelson in Golden State but I am not sure that should be held against him.

At 6’9 250 he is able to play both the three or the four. He is really tough. He has always been a good rebounder for a 3 and a poor rebounder for a 4.

He is a lifetime 45% shooter and a 36% three point shooter. The problem is over the last few years he became obsessed with the outside shot shooting on average 5 a game while in Golden State and 6 a game while in New York. In the meantime, he only goes to the line 2 to 3 times a game. In the early part of his career, these numbers were reversed.

According to the Locke offensive ranking, Harrington was a 15.6 (0 is D-League 10 is average and 20 is good starter, 30 is elite) for the 09-10 season. He used 31% of his possessions to shot a 3 and went to the line 11% of the time.

His numbers for the 08-09 season were very similar, a 16.0 Locke offensive ranking.

Bottom line is Harrington can score and can beat people with mismatches at both the 3 and the 4 position. On a team that just lost a huge scoring punch that is much needed. He is tough and nasty something lacking at time from the Jazz. At 30 years old he could be rejuvenated to be in a good organization.

If the Jazz acquire Al Harrington to fill the front court gap I think it could be very successful.

Thoughts?

So did Al on defense. At least mot of the time. Talks with Harrington should be going something like this "Al we hope you have a great season somewhere else and enjoy the rest of your career."

I'd rather give those minutes to Jeremy Evans.
