Was just gonna post it... No surprises here. I'm just hoping they don't do the same thing they did with Sap.

With the way KOC has handled things this offseason, Portland could offer the full MLE and we would be forced to take it because we are so thin in size and we wouldn't want to create another area of concern with the departure of Matthews. Blazers will offer a toxic contract. Jazz will match.

I'd be shocked if the Jazz don't match Wesley's offer sheet--even if it means Portland screws the Jazz by nudging them back towards the luxury tax with another "toxic" offer. They aren't in dire straights financially after watching Boozer and Korver go. Matthews is young, earned big minutes while other guys were out with injuries and I expect has a bright future on the team.

The latest twitter is the offer is 5 years, $25 million (though Siler has not confirmed this). He indicates the Jazz were bracing themselves for such an offer. It will use up their mid-level exception but what can you do....

Wow 5 years 25 million is a lot for Matthews. I think I would rather just sign brewer and use the rest of our MLE on a big man.

There's no guarantee they will match, but if they don't, an already unsteady fanbase is gonna get a whole lot madder.

Rudy makes $1,246,680 and both teams are over the cap so a sign and trade of Millsap for Fernandez won't work.

And while it is a bit more than people hoped for, I think the Jazz match. Basically they are replacing Korver with Matthews' new contract. If it is front loaded, it may result in some luxury tax this year (although there is time to manuver to avoid as much as possible) but then the next several years would be great--when Kirilenko's deal is off the books and the Jazz can actually make some bigger moves.

Seems like a lot of money for Portland to pay for a backup to Roy. I'd almost let them have him. And I love Matthews. But, I wouldn't mind seeing Portland eat that contract either. Either way I'm fine. But, I think Matthews is probably worth about what Morrow is, and Morrow's contract was no where near that amount.

So, I honestly don't mind if we don't match. We can probably replace him and let Portland be stuck with a mid level contract for a reserve SG. That's just fine with me.

Here's my take...

Matthews last year was a MLE player for us. He worked his way into the starting SG role, he has a complete game, and is only going to get better with the more minutes coming his way. Yeah we would use up the MLE, but what are the alternatives? He's a starter for us and did everything that was asked of him. Pay the man. There's a reason why Boozer wanted Wesley to go to Chicago and there was a reason why Portland is signing him to such an offer. Not just to screw is over, but because Wesley has talent.

Replace him with who? Think of all those years we went through not having a SG that could play defense and hit an outside shot. Matthews is that man and he showed a confidence, skillset, and consistency we had not seen out of a SG for quite some time. So I ask you this. With our MLE, who would you replace Wesley with that's currently on the market that as an identical defensive/offensive game?

ugh figures... that is a lot of money to pay for a backup if you're portland.. I'd be almost tempted to punish portland for being stupid once again...and foot them with a off the bench $5 million dollar backup.

But he is our starter, and Korver is gone so we NEED production there and 5 a year for a starter shooting guard is not BAD.. so I think you go with it. Geez Portland way to annoy us. :x

Your team will match. Plus, Matthews will want to stay in Utah because he starts for you all, whereas he will be buried behind Roy in Portland. He'd certainly get minutes in Portland as he will likely take Rudy's minutes as he will probably be traded, but, still, he will not get starter minutes.

While I understand as a fan why you'd be pissed at the Blazers' FO for going after two of your players the last 2 free agency periods, you should keep in mind its actually complimentary to think Portland wants the players you all drafted.

Can we please trade McMillan for Sloan?

That would be a coup I could fall in love with.

Thanks BballFanAddict - yeah wish your front office spent time attacking the lakers and not the jazz (fisher ect.) you guys could use that cash for other things (power forward)

I'm happy with sloan, last time we were in this situation after stockton and malone left someone predicted (I think ESPN) that we were going to win 16 games or something like that..and we won 40 that year (I think or close and missed the playoffs by like one year..WITH A TEAM muuuch muuch worse than this..) so I'm happy with Sloan...happy the Jazz Note is back.. happy with the rookie's in camp.. basically I'm happy with Sloan and our system.

I think we match too - so this will be 7 days of waiting about nothing (Jazz normally stretch it out 7 days before deciding anything anyway)

I would not match a 5 year 25 mil deal. CJ makes 3 mil a year. We could bring back ronnie for 3 mil a year. Let the Blazers have him at that price. He has peaked.
