PROPS FOR HAYWARD: Jazz newcomer Gordon Hayward was rated as the No. 1 rookie in summer-league play in the online Courtside Analyst's last data-based rankings (as of July 15).
Two players with NBA experience — third-year Memphis center Joey Dorsey and Denver sophomore Ty Lawson — ranked ahead of Hayward overall.
But the Jazz's No. 9 pick in last month's draft was rated ahead of the likes of top pick John Wall (10th), Evan Turner (9th), DeMarcus Cousins (5th), Wesley Johnson (13th) and Derrick Favors (15th) in the rankings that factor in a variety of statistics and results.
"The best rookie so far has been Utah's Gordon Hayward," wrote the author, tywill33. "He was exceptional in the Orlando Summer League."

The link is broken. Somehow I find this very surprising, as there hasn't been much mention of Hayward being outstanding. Who is this tywill33?

Give me a break, while Hayward displayed his talents, Wall showed that he could be a hybrid of Wade's finishing skills with Parker's speed. Hayward was not the best, I think Cousins was better too.

The Summer League season came to an end… mercifully for most of the newcomers. Between the Orlando and Vegas schedules, only one rookie prospect really stood out, and that was Butler’s Gordon Hayward.
The guy I said was a “Can’t Miss”, kind of missed. DeMarcus Cousins of Kentucky showed this summer he’s got some issues with efficient scoring, shot selection, and ball protection that he needs to work out. His final Win Score per 48 was terrible.
If you notice also, after I raved about Tiny Gallon of the Bucks he completely went into the tank. I mean completely. His final WS48 is horrific. Good start, horrible finish for the Tiny man.
John Wall, the number one draft pick, did okay. Bare in mind, however, I never said he was a bad player, I just said he projected as — at best — a slightly above average player. I questioned why he was such an undisputed choice for the number one pick.
In a relative sense, Greg Monroe of the Pistons did a bit better than I would have foreseen. Luke Harangody of the Celtics did much better. Beyond that, its basically a wasteland.
Below I provide the player’s unadjusted Win Scores, but I provide them according to backcourt/frontcourt.
Frontcourt players
1. Gordon Hayward…(14.84)
2. Luke Harangody…(11.57)
3. Patrick Patterson…(9.70)
4. Greg Monroe…(8.31)
5. Larry Sanders…(8.14)
6. Jarvis Varnado…(7.80)
7. Luke Babbitt…(6.60)
8. Dereck Caracter…(6.03)
9. Damian James…(5.66)
10. Hassan Whiteside…(5.14)
11. Derrick Favors…(4.35)
12. DeMarcus Cousins…(2.83)
13. Quincy Pondexter…(1.85)
14. Al Farouq Aminu…(1.43)
15. Tiny Gallon…(0.99)
16. Daniel Orton…(-15.13)
Backcourt Players
1. John Wall…(6.52)
2. Evan Turner…(4.55)
3. Wesley Johnson…(2.19)
4. Eric Bledsoe…(-1.53)

Win Score = PTS + REB + STL + ½*BLK + ½*AST
– FGA – ½*FTA – TO – ½*PF
Win Score is a simplification of Wins Produced. To calculate Wins Produced you must multiply a player’s stats by the value of those stats (value in terms of wins), compare your result to the average performance of a player at his position, and then adjust for a few statistics only tracked for the team. If all your looking at is a single game, or if you are just plain lazy, all these steps are a bit tedious. Hence the need for the Win Score metric.
Win Score is certainly simple. But is it accurate? We note in the book that productivity per minute (the first step in calculating Wins Produced) and Win Score per minute have a 0.99 correlation. Position matters in the evaluation of an NBA player, so one should adjust Win Score for the average Win Score at the position the player plays. If we compare position adjusted Win Score per minute and Wins Produced per 48 minute [WP48] we see a 0.994 correlation. As we state in the book, what matters in the evaluation of a player is the player’s statistical production relative to what an average player produces at that position. The team adjustment, despite the claims of a few critics of Wins Produced, has a negligible impact on the ultimate evaluation of a player.

The headline should say he was ranked as the top ROOKIE at summer league--not give the impression that he was the top player.

Lets not get too excited. Deshawn Stevenson might have been ranked #1 as well.
It's nice. Don't get me wrong. But, it's summer league.

Well Summer leauge's the first place we get to see the skills of our newly acquired players so we should take their performances and make the best out of them.

I'm excited. His skills were displayed in a team format, not in a flashy offensive explosion sort of way.

Yes, DR, stellar point. This isn't Marco Bellineli going off for 40 points in his debut, or Dorell Wright dominating off the dribble and scoring over scrubs in a way that would never translate to an NBA court. This was a guy who understands basketball getting to his spots, making good basketball decisions, refusing to force the action, and converting his quality opportunities at a high rate. This is, essentially, a measure of efficiency, and I agree that Gordon was probably the most efficient rookie in all of summer league play. There is something to be said for that, since it will be the same thing asked of him as a rookie. I don't think he has the physical abilities to be a superstar, but I do think that he has the simple craftiness and bball IQ to make himself into a borderline star, along the lines of a prime Jeff Hornacek.
If GH can average 14/5.5/2.5 in 30-35 minutes per game with 48-50% FGs, 40% 3s, 85% FTs and not be a liability on defense (I don't think he will be) then he will be a excellent pickup for us and might push us into that elite groups of clubs that are annual favorites for the championship. I hated the pick, and still would redo it if I could, but there is an undeniable quality about him that makes it hard to believe he will be a bust. You watch him, and there's just one thought that keeps springing to your mind "this kid knows how to play the game."

Playing well in SL is always better than playing poorly, but let's keep things in perspective. After all this report does say that he didn't play as well as Joey frickin' Dorsey

It has nothing to do with the "better" player; it has to do mostly with efficiency. The point with Hayward is that almost everything he did was right.
Wall and Cousins displayed a great deal of very good things, but efficiency and rich decision making were not their highs.
Summer League presents us with kind of chaotic games, an the fact that a guy is efficient and take good decisions in such a mess is certainly a very good sign.

What I am taking from this is that Gordy is the most NBA ready player out of all the rookies. I think he is far from having the most potential, but I am stoked that he will likely be able to be a regular contributor to this teams success this season, and it will only get better from here on out.
The other great thing is that we drafted him, he will have a rookie contract, and the Blazers won't be able to steal him next season. All this assuming he does well.

I really think Hayward is going to get raves in the NBA, not as a superstar like the Walls or the Turners, but as an efficient player who makes his teammates and his team better. The kid is confident. Plays the system. Seems very coachable.
Would love to see him play the point, off the bench. That would be pretty intriguing. Throw him in there alongside Price. I believe he would be effective there.

Let's face it, so many of you want Hayward to fail just to validate yourselves. Many of you who blast KOC for not taking a "Go Big or Go Bust" player are the same ones who complain about Koufas being "another wasted KOC pick". Hayward could be R.O.Y. and you would still find ways to complain. "Sure. he was good this year, but he's peaked." "He's simply a product of our system." or "Imagine how good a real top 10 pick would've done on our team this year.". These excuse will come up this year, watch for them.
I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT HAYWARD WILL BE A CRUCIAL PART OF OUR TEAMS ROTATION BEFORE THE MEDIA PROCLAIMED "REPLACEMENT FOR BOSH" ED DAVIS IS!!!
Sincerely,
D.G.

Well, I probably would have drafted Sanders, and I wasn't happy when they picked Hayward... but I certainly hoped to be wrong. I don't want the things I like or care of to fail just to get some pretended self-validation! That's pretty cynic!
