Blazer fan here. I've been hearing a lot about how good Wesley Mathews is defensively, but I can't find any good highlight videos of him. I'd appreciate any links, or stories of Mathews skills from the fans that best know his game.

Not sure if there are any videos focusing on his D. That being said, understand that he is at the very least and above average defender. His biggest drawback on D is his height and lack of length. But he is a fine player. Definitely hate you and your crap teams crap FO for stealing him.(only kidding... kinda) You'll love him.

People say he can guard small forwards. I just have trouble believing it at his size. Do you think he can guard starting small forwards? Or just the undersized ones, and those coming off the bench.

I don't see him guarding against a SF (trying to imagine AK playing against Mathews..yeah that will not work well..). Maybe if the SF was light weight but.. we never lined Mathews up against a SF.

Don't go thinking he's a devensive stopper or anything. He just won't look horrible guarding good players. Doesn't mean he can shut down people, or is an all pro or anything. He'll just be solid, and make some fun highlight plays for you. I think from being not drafted, and surprising so many people he gets a little overrated. He's a fine bench player/fill in stater, but if he struggles in the next few years for you it will be because expectations are too high. You signed him to a huge long deal after one good season. That is very dangerous in my book.

Agreed. Wes became one of my favorite players, but Portland's desire to hamstring the Jazz is really going to backfire on them. Even if Wes plays well, which depends largely on where they play him and what amount of minutes, I can see his contract being the type of contract that hinders bigger signings over the next two or three years when some of their younger players become free agents. eg:Oden, Batum, etc.

No videos or bathroom pics for that matter. Seems like sensible guy

Props on getting Jefferson. Im anxious for next season, and Wesley Mathews is all Blazer fans really have to talk about... Other than chris paul pipe dreams

Matthews isn't exactly flashy so there won't be many fan videos. You could go sign up for Synergy Sports if you want to break down plays for a lot of players.

Agree. He was able to use his strength to deny Melo position and his savvy to bait him into some charges. He didn't play Melo all the time, but there were stretches where he played very well against him.
