Utah Jazz players in pre-preseason mode

Post#1 » by Purch » Tue Sep 7, 2010 11:56 am

SALT LAKE CITY — The kids are back in school, Labor Day Weekend is in the rear-view mirror and the college football season has kicked off.

Need more proof the leaves are about to change colors?

Many Utah Jazz players have returned from their offseason adventures and have begun doing pre-preseason workouts together in the Beehive State. The team's fall training camp doesn't officially get underway for another three weeks, but summer is over as far as the players are concerned.

Small forward C.J. Miles, for one, has no qualms with the changing of seasons. The small forward, who flew back to Utah this past weekend, has anticipated returning and rolling up his sleeves after spending most of his summer at home in Dallas and training/chilling in New York City.

Miles said he, Deron Williams and other players will work out a couple of times a day and play pick-up games between now and the beginning of camp at the end of the month. The coaching and training staffs are often on hand to help out as well.

Miles admitted it isn't all work, though.

"It's fun, though, because all of the guys work out together so we're competitive. It's fun," said Miles, who's entering his sixth NBA season. "It's not that bad. Conditioning, a lot of work, other than that we're good."

The players will spend the next few weeks working on "camaraderie" and getting used to the thin Wasatch Front air again.

"All the guys get together," Miles said, "and we just get a chance to jell."

Coming together will be necessary for the Jazz to have any chance at defending their Northwest Division championship and making a run in the playoffs after the offseason changes. Since being ousted from the playoffs by the Los Angeles Lakers in May, Utah lost Carlos Boozer, Kyle Korver and Wesley Matthews and added Al Jefferson, Raja Bell and Gordon Hayward, with more to come.

Miles said the returning players look forward to getting to know the new additions.

"Everybody's excited. It feels good. Change is always exciting," Miles said. "Not to say we wanted to change, but at the same time when it happens you embrace it. We've got good players."

How good they can become will in part depend on how well they get that chemistry going over the next month and a half before the 2010-11 regular-season opener in Denver on Oct. 27. The Jazz's first preseason game is at home vs. Matthews' Portland Trail Blazers exactly a month from today.

Jefferson, the Jazz's big offseason trade pick-up from Minnesota, told the Deseret News last month that he moved to Utah mid-summer to acclimate himself to his new surroundings. The center has been working with coaches and players who were around at times in the summer.

"I'm in business mode," Jefferson said moments before tossing out the first pitch at a Salt Lake Bees game in August.

"I want to be ready," he added, "so I'm in business mode to try (and) get here, get used to this thin air out here and be ready to play when training camp (starts)."

I can't wait for the season to start......

I don't know what it is, maybe it's Big Al and Hayward, but I am more excited this year than pretty much any previous year.......

Agreed! I think it is a combination of all of the off-season moves. I'm stoked about the new look, I'm looking forward to seeing Hayward making everyone eat crow, having Raja back is gonna fun to watch some hardnosed play again, and Big Al is gonna be a beast in our system!!! I don't see how any Jazz fan could NOT be excited about this coming season.

I know Deron, AK, Memo and Millsap have houses. Others might too. They still go off all sorts of places in the off season though. A lot of time it's for working out in places with high end trainers, sometimes it's a few weeks in the home town or country, sometimes it's vacation.

Who cares? When you are millionare and young you go to the best cities... hell, I'm not millionaire and I am from europe and my last vacations were in 2008 in New York and in 2009 in Miami....
And I live in Barcelona, one of the best european cities.

It's not about SLC, it's you want to be with your family when you are young and you want to visit best cities.

the article talked about players flying back to utah to get ready for the preseason. i was curious as to what players were already here...as in living here. i knew about deron ak and sap. im pretty sure price does too. i didnt know about okur though. i think it's kinda cool when an nba player makes his home in the area he represents. but if they choose not too, i dont hold it against him.

I am actually not as stoked for this season as I usually am, which is strange because we have a brand new line up, and one of the highest draft picks in our teams history.

I've been way more excited about the Utes football team this year.

Huh, I don't know what Northwest Division Championship the Jazz are defending, unless they technically got a share of it by having the same record as the Nugs.

I really enjoyed seeing CJ Miles 'bust out' last year, especially later in the year and during the playoffs (I mean his 15 points/game were pretty big. Will he keep his starting spot this year? Strikes me as a very serious, hard working guy, especially after reading the article above. And he's just 23 years old...

Last weekend I was up in SLC for a night. Walked by the ESA, saw the big poster of Al, Raja and Sap and got so pumped I almost punched my wife in the arm. This has been the longest offseason ever...I can't wait for opening night.

I'm pretty excited, as I think Jefferson fits perfectly and will be a better fit than Boozer. I'm excited for the Utes too, but this isn't a BCS team. It's a Vegas Bowl team.

I am also in the "meh" mode. While I am interested to see how this new lineup will work, I doubt we are significantly better than last year, which means we still have no shot against the lakers in the playoffs. My prediction for the season is:

50 wins
8th seed in the playoffs
1st round loss to the lakers (4-1)

Of course, as a fan, I want to be proven wrong, but this is what I realistically expect.

I'll be a bit more optimistic.

55 wins.

Either lose to Lakers in WCF or move on to finals. (vs. Orlando I'll guess)
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

Honestly, LA is the only team that could for sure beat Utah in a best of 7 situation.

So I'm hoping for a 2, 3, 6 or 7 seed. If we're lucky, some other team could do the dirty work for us.
Jazz on your face.

Who knows, we have a "Kobe stopper" though I won't be counting on that. I will be counting on Al playing far better than Boozer against them.

Return to Utah Jazz
