Duke's Jon Scheyer gets invite to Jazz camp

Jon Scheyer is one of those guys with a good game for college. Sweet shooting stroke with the spot-up jumper, was pretty efficient everywhere else and helped lead Duke to a national title. Dukies love him.
But NBA scouts were not impressed. Not athletic enough, can't defend at that level. He can shoot but was considered one dimensional. He went undrafted.
But the Utah Jazz are giving him a shot -- they have invited the guard to camp, according to the wise men at Sham Sports.
On one hand, the Jazz actually have some open roster spots if they want to carry more people. So there is that.
The problem is, let's look at the guard rotation in Utah: Deron Williams, Ronnie Price and Sundiata Gaines all at the point; with Raja Bell, C.J. Miles and Othyus Jeffers at the two. That's six guards deep.
Not sure how Scheyer cracks that group. Or why Utah keeps a seventh guard. He's probably just camp fodder. But he is getting a shot.

The Jazz are a team that relies on players who have high BBIQ more than athletic ability. That's why I think Scheyer and Ryan Thompson (If reports of him being a Jazz camp invitee are true) have an excellent chance to make the team. Both are excellent system players who provide outside shooting. I heard Scheyer has been working out on his PG skills. He could start out as a third string PG who could eventually become a backup with more experience. Gaines and Jeffers are limited offensively and can easily be let go to make room for better players.

Gaines, Jeffers have camp/unguaranteed contracts... any guard coming to Jazz camp have a real shot to make the opening night roster.... just ask Wesley Matthews which camp does he sugest guards to go....
If Ryan Thompson is there too I like the competition for a guard spot... good guard invitees....

I dont think Jeffers and Gaines make next years roster as the Jazz may look for cheap alternatives like signing players to periodic 10 day contracts or cheaper rookies.

Well, those highlight videos are almost always useless, but, all I saw there was a jumpshooter. I don't think his driving is going to translate to the next level. And I didn't see any PG skills.
So? A spark off the bench? What are we looking at here?

Yeah...
Price is an excellent third-string energy guard... but you're really stretching credulity when you say there's no room for another guy because Sundiata Gains and Othyus Jeffers can't be pushed down or off the depth chart.

Scheyer is a very smart player. While not athletic, I think he can be a great back up and has a ceiling of Steve Blake.

One interesting thing about Scheyer was that he rated relatively well on hollinger's college prediction model, which has a pretty good track record on non-freshmen.

KOC should be commended for getting this guy in camp. He will make it in the league. He has size and acceptable athleticism. He is a legit dead eye. I mean that. Korver, Hornacek like. Maybe even better than Korver (not Horny though).
He is a better basketball player than Sundiata Gaines, definitely Othyus.
Jazz lack a solid 3 Pt shooter after losing Korver, I hope he makes the roster.

Brian Smith from the tribune has reported that Jon Scheyer will NOT be attending the Jazz training camp...this according to his agent.

Bummer. Earl Watson is supposedly still in the mix. He is a nice player. Is also one of the few (only?) Mexicans in the NBA.

Was it a false report or it's just another guy who doesnt't like Utah?

Camp invites aren't picky, ever. A select few can be picky about which from the handful of teams will have a roster spot for them. They will not be picky about coach, organization philosophy, team colors, and most of all location.
