Which player in the NBA is the antithesis of Jerry Sloan?

Post#1 » by dalekjazz » Mon Oct 25, 2010 3:32 pm

There are a lot of players in the NBA who would have problems playing for Sloan, for example Ron Artest, Allen Iverson, etc. because of attitude problems and problems with authority. But the one thing these guys have in common with Sloan is that they play with heart. I think Vince Carter is the one guy in the NBA who could never play for Sloan. He has all the talent in the world but admits to not playing hard all the time. I think he would have trouble playing in the Utah system where he doesn't have the green light to chuck whenever he wants. Who are players you could not see playing for Sloan?

Throw in Stephen Jackson, J.R. Smith, Gilbert Arenas, Monta Ellis, Jeff Foster (just kidding), Delonte West (Sloan wouldn't know what to do with his semi-psychosis), Vladamir Radmonavic, and Zach Randolph.

I think there are some malcontents that would do ok because their talents mesh, if their personalities don't. Artest and Z-Bo come to mind.

Basically any player Isiah Thomas would trade the house for is an anti-Sloan type....

A.I. would be interesting. Would have loved to have seen Sprewell attempt to choke Jerry like he did Carlisimo.

A few more that come to mind: Baron Davis, Ricky Davis ( now out of the league), Matt Barnes, I can't really see him and Shaq getting along at all. Here's another question - who in the league reminds you most of Sloan as a player or coach? What player (not on our team today) could you see fitting in with this team ( coaching style) the best or easiest?

Grant Hill comes to mind.

I've always thought Kirk Heinrich looks like Sloan did when Sloan was a Bull. Heinrich has the same size, similar face, same hair, played guard for the Bulls, couldnt rely on athleticism. Biggest difference was Kirk's strengths as a player were his shooting (I'm using the past because I believe he has peaked and is regressing now) and Sloan's strengths were his defense and tenacity.

Greg Ostertag was the first guy I thought of. Lazy. Doesn't like basketball. Gets slapped down and goes fetal position. Just opposite of Sloan.

But, for current players? Hmmm. Maybe Arenas? Guy is a clown where Sloan is all about business.

John Amaechi.

A gay, British big man who openly admitted not loving the game of basketball and played with zero toughness.

Stephen Jackson I've seen speak with Jerry and Phil and was very respectful. I think he would be great in this system because I think if Stephen respects the coach then he plays hard/well.

Any prima donna type player would struggle with Jerry. A.I. Carmelo, VC

Nate Robinson comes to mind.

I have to disagree with a lot of players you guys suggested, specifically Matt Barnes. His attitude has Sloan written all over it, as does Delonte West who plays extremely hard. I also think Sloan would love Carmelo. Sloan loves skilled guys, and Melo is extremely skilled, I think Melo would be a superstar in Sloan's system. His midrange game and passing would be absurd here.

Andray Blatche would cause problems in Utah.

But Blatche just needs one more rebound!

All Sloan team:

c: Dwight Howard
pf: Pau Gasol
sf: Kevin Durant
sg: Dywane Wade
pg: Deron Williams

2nd All Sloan team

c: Andrew Bogut
pf: Tim Duncan
sf: Danny Granger
sg: Brandon Roy
pg: Rajan Rondo

I don't think Lebron, Kobe, Carmelo, nor Kobe would gel as seemlessly or without ego issues as these guys.
