Why no Corner Threes?

Have you ever noticed how the Jazz don't take a lot of corner threes? By some measurements it's the most lethal spot on the floor:
http://www.82games.com/locations.htmI can't find exact numbers on how many the Jazz attempt, but I know it's not many. Even when the Jazz had Korver they didn't take many. With Deron's ability to get into the lane the Jazz should always have at least one guy in the corner.
But I guess I'm getting into the realm of redesigning the Jazz's sacrosanct offense...

When Ak is in the corner it is a wasted shot.

I don't think Sloan realizes that you get 3 points for shooting from the corner. Would also explain why we don't guard it either.

I think you may be on to something here....

Its much shorter a shot and is deadly. They should be having Bell go there like Bruce Bowen did. It is either an open shot or it takes a defender out of the middle for the drivers to work.

Its not in Sloans system. If its not in the system, it doesn't get done.

Hornacek used to set up shop there a lot in the old days, often making entry passes from there and lingering while Stock or Russell cut through. But I haven't seen much of that since Jeff retired.
Sidenote: Jeff Hornacek was one of the best entry passers in NBA history.

He wasn't often DEEP in the corner- he was usually elbow high or slightly closer to the corner.
I think we were referring to those Bruce Bowen Jazz Killing Specials.
Totally correct about Horny's passing- he was underrated in just about all aspects of the game.

Agreed. It's kinda funny that such a specific facet of his game is remembered so fondly by Jazz fans.

Korver hit a lot of his 3s from that area, maybe not tight in the corner, but from the side shot.
Unfortunately, CJ loves to take the 3 off a curl (!!!!!!!!) and from the arc. I have been wondering this too recently, why no corner/baseline 3s? Even camping Okur there would be a decent option, as long as there is somebody to get back on defense when it's a miss.

Now you're sounding like Jerry.

But it's true. Long rebounds off 3s are the easiest transition basket to make, besides a steal and breakaway.

I'd like to see some analysis to back this up. Jerry often throws it out there (as do others) but it's one of those statements I want to see proven with some numbers.
I'm quite skeptical that corner three attempts lead to more transition buckets than other shots.

I'm generalizing for all 3s really, I don't know that the corner is any more susceptible than a straight on 3, unless everyone is sagged in for some reason. I do know, simply from watching games, that the Jazz are terrible in transition off any missed 3.

You're right that he wasn't directly along the baseline quite as often. I'm certainly all for camping Okur out there. I also wish Kyle had spent more time there.
HP: it is interesting how big the little things turn out to be. I really took for granted things like that. But once Jeff was gone and we had Quincy Lewis (not an awful player, but about 50 notches below Hornacek) making the feeds, I thought, "Well, ****. That other guy really knew what he was doing."

Because Memo will just pump fake on half of them and take a much worse shot, ala Scott Padgett.

Matthews had a lot of corner three shots and made a good percentage of them. He wouldn't have gotten the starting spot as an undrafted rookie breaking Sloan's system.

That's true, actually. Matthews got a good portion of those.
