Does the Utah Jazz have the most inexpierenced coaching staff in the NBA.
Corbin 7 years
Layden 5 years
Horny 0 years (some player development)

How will these guys do against veteran coaches in the playoffs when expierence counts.

If the Jazz bring in a 4th coach i dont want malone or stockton, I want a veteran coach.

The Jazz need a defensive or offensive specialist for an assistant coach. But none of the good ones will come here with Layden being the first assistant. It's not only a money problem, but what coach with any real NBA coaching ability, and especially one with real knowledge of defensive or offensive schemes, is going to sit on the far end of the bench acknowledging that Layden is ahead of them.

Layden has to go back to his end of bench position or better yet to the front office. There must be something he could do there. I don't care if Corbin likes Layden. He better be smarter than that. That first assistant position is vital and has to contribute on the same level as the head coach, if not more. The 2nd and 3rd assistant better bring something to the party also. He really can't hire a good solid assistant until after the season is over.

I don't know if anyone on here is considering the possibility that Corbin will leave during the off season. Now that he has gotten the promotion, other teams will be interested in hiring him. The only advantage to staying in Utah is the Miller's tendencies to stick with people even when they shouldn't. If they give him a year deal worth $4 mill or more a year, he should probably stay. Anything less than that for what he will have to go through here, he should look carefully at other offers.

Veteran coaches that are good bench coaches will hurt the Jazz.

They are an inexperienced staff, but Scotty Layden especially has been in the biz forever. He was an assistant under Sloan for 5 years, but he was also an assistant under his dad, Frank, back in the 80's before he took over for Checketts as GM.

I worry we are the denver nuggets of last year playoffs. They had to play our expierenced coach with AD who was new and inexpierenced. They should of beat us.

I am listening to Gordon Chiesa on KFAN, they should call him up.

If retiredcoach is to be trusted, Layden doesn't sound like he's much of an asset to the coaching staff.

Based on his track record with the NY Knicks I must say I don't have a lot of confidence in his judgment.

You might want to look a little deeper into Chiesa's background before calling Corbin with this particular recommendation. The Jazz have his phone number.

Well, I don't know if trust is the right word, but I think you're second statement is one factor of many. How has Layden done outside of the protected environment of Utah? I know he takes credit for drafting Malone and Stockton, but as far as I'm aware, individuals alone don't make draft decisions. He would not have been in the NBA without his father getting him in, and Miller continuing to acquiesce to the elder Layden. His years in NY were memorable. The Knicks under Layden's watch (and of his successor Isiah Thomas) were called the "Worst Franchise in Sports" by ESPN.com How many other teams have tried to hire him away from the Jazz?

Layden seems like a really nice guy. Unfortunately, the Jazz don't need a nice guy. They need to win games--give me Rick Majerus and Bobby Knight. My view is Layden would provide better service in the front office. Oh, who knows. Maybe he'll be the next head coach if another team hires Corbin this summer.

And no I'm not saying they should be offered jobs with the Jazz, unless the Jazz feel the need to replace Sloan's vocabulary!

I concur my retired comrade.
The best thing that Layden did for the Jazz was **** up the Knicks so bad we got to draft Hayward. The guy doesn't have any experience playing pro-ball so I have to question his coaching ability. Unfortunately I think he'll be the first assistant for awhile, it's just how the Jazz do business.

Um....you do know Layden was in the front office in NY, not on the bench. And so you think it would be better for him to move back into the front office here in Utah? I don't think he should be anywhere near the front office again (just reference your quote from Wikipedia).
I'd expect the bench to have a bit of shuffling this offseason when these changes normally happen and Corbin actually has a chance to get things settled.
My final beef is the notion that everyone is going to leave the Jazz and that this would be so bad. Why would you think Corbin might leave the team at the end of this year? After coaching what...20 games? Are you one of the same people worried that Deron might leave when his contract is up? The paranoia doesn't flatter you. Even if people find situations that work better change isn't always bad.

Actually we may not have to worry about the playoffs if the team can't turn things around soon. They are only 1/2 game out of 9th in the west.

Yes, I'm very aware of what Layden did for NY as both the VP/GM and Pres/GM. It took them a long time to recover from it. I wasn't suggesting Layden become GM here. I was thinking of maybe marketing or special events manager. I like the wikipedia quote. Details!

I don't care about players or coaches coming and going on the Jazz. I'm more of an observer than a rabid fan. Williams can stay or go, whatever works for him. If he's going to stay with the Jazz, the Jazz aren't going to be a strong playoff team until he learns to play team basketball, and I'm not sure he can.

I think there's a 25% chance Corbin will get a better offer, and he may very well take it. It's hard to live in the shadow of someone like Sloan. As I said in one of my other posts, if the Miller's give him $4 mill a year with a 5 year deal, in my opinion he should take it because they won't fire him during the term of the contract while the Jazz are rebuilding. Anything less than that, he should seriously consider other deals. If he takes the deal, and gets the rebuilding done in two to three years, everyone will forget about Sloan, especially of the Jazz can win round 2 of the playoffs in that time frame. If he doesn't get the rebuilding done, then he's made enough money not to worry about it and he can go back to being an NBA assistant or college head coach.

The core of the Jazz will be Millsap, Jefferson, Hayward, Watson and Evans. If Williams comes back after the lockout and extends beyond 12, he'll be a core guy also. Everyone else is expendable or trade material.

The Jazz have a problem with Okur. He has $11 mil coming next year, and he won't recover enough to be more than a $5 mil bench guy. When bigs get hurt this badly, they rarely recover to more than 60% or so. I hope he does better, but he's potentially a major salary black hole for a year. Hopefully the Jazz can pick up some size in the free agent market that can actually play center and be a major defensive presence. They need more consistency from the 2 and the 6th man positions. Who knows what will happen there. Next year Hayward will even out the SF play and he'll be able to contribute at the 2 also.

As far as assistant coaches go, I've said Layden will have to move back to the end of the bench, or if Corbin's on his game into something besides coaching. Hornacek will be fine in a couple of years, but a true top assistant will be hard to find and somewhat expensive.
