Franchise Tag

The NBA is looking at adding the Franchise tag to the new CBA this may in all likely hood save the Jazz and Deron Williams or make a team think before offering D Williams a contract knowing it will have to give up some first round picks (coulb be as many as 3 unprotected) to sign him away from Utah still along way in the making but after the way LBJ handeled thing this summer the NBA owners are looking long and hard at this.

I don't follow the NFL that closely. How has it worked for them? I get the impression it's quite detested by players and agents and is seen as the "nuclear option" in negotiations.
I think the CBA negotiations will have to get really ugly before a franchise tag gets approved by the union.

there is a huge thread about it on the GB.
A franchise is a one year deal for the player. They receive 120% their previous year's salary or the average of the top 5 paid player at their position, which is ever higher. A team gets one franchise tag per year and can use it on the same player as long as they want.
I don't think it would be good for the NBA.

As long as they want? There would have to be a limit. That would be too sweet and would cost someone like Ben Wallace.

Plus if it's every year, that would mean a significant number of all-star players are based on the average, greatly lowering the average. PLUS, NBA positions are much more open to change.

Positions are much more defined in the NFL and salaries are different based on position. I would imagine that it would just be the top 5 salaries overall. There would have to be a few modifications from the NFL model to make it work.
It sounds sweet at first but you have to think that the average salary of the top 5 paid players would be $20.2 million.
If you wanted to tag that player again the next year, it would be about $24.2 million. There are few players that are worth that much money.
I am not really a fan of the idea. Very few players would likely be affected by the rule.

The franchise tag is not a horrible idea and works great in the NFL. However in the NFL you can only use it on a player twice. Usually using the franchise tag on a player is seen as extending the negotiating table. The only guys that hate it are guys that want out from a terrible team, but is also their best player. I personally think it would be a good idea for the NBA, but change the tag to maybe 1 use per player.

7 years too late. Sasha Pavlovic is already gone...

There is no way the union is going for the franchise tag. This is nothing more then a negotiating ploy.

HAHA, you wouldn't give that to Sasha... even if he was eligible. They lost Sasha to the expansion draft and not FA. The franchise tag wouldn't even been applicable at that time.
It works in the NFL to a degree. It does create a lot of upset players and players who hold out.

Apologies; I thought that remark would transcend the need for green font.

The green font comment was just a ruse. If we had any BRAINS, we'd sign Sasha Pavlovic for the rest of the season and start him at the 2. He has a combination of grace, defensive acumen, and precision passing that comes along once in a generation. Letting him leave for Charlotte was this franchise's darkest hour.

The franchise tag is used to "hold" the player--then they usually continue with negotiations towards a long-term deal to replace it with. And the NFL has the luxury of not having fully guaranteed contracts which give the clubs more room to manuver. NBA would have to deal with that problem too.
The players currently are as well positioned as any players union I think. Fully guaranteed contracts and various ways to move if they choose and still get big money (sign & trades, etc.). I still think the negotiation this summer is going to be ugly.

Don't ask me how I know this but I have an obscure knowledge for random facts, but the Franchise tag can only be used for 3 years and is the average of the top 5 players for that position. After 3 years a deal is worked out for the player or they are traded/cut. That number is lower due to the average time spent in the league is only 5 years or slightly higher. There are other tags you can put on a player like transition tags and what not but lets not get into that.
I personally love the idea of a franchise tag since there has to be some kind of protection for owners/teams in situations like Lebron and what not. I can't imagine a player being stuck on a team like the clippers forever though. However there is something be to said that a player should be able to play where they want.
A player that has been franchised cannot sign with another team, where a transition tag that has been placed can sign with another team but their previous team can match the offer or offer 2 first round picks as compensation. 1st rounders in the NFL are more valuable then in the NBA due to the depth of talent in the draft every year, so there has to be some kind of trade off or penalty for the team signing the player, it would have to be like THREE 1st round unprotected picks and even then I don't know if that is enough. For example if Dwill could sign with the Lakers who cares about 3 late round 1st round picks. In the end I think there has to be a soft cap and a hard cap in the NBA to prevent teams like the Lakers from just endless spending. There has to be something to bring a competitive balance.
It will be interesting what the new CBA will bring
Sorry about the long post but I hope it brings perspective
