What if....

Many probably won't like this, but its something I've discussed with friends and wanted to know your guys input.

So we trade Dwill because he "might" not want to re-sign with the Jazz next year, we preempt Dwill and rather than try to convince him to stay, we got what we can now. Its an interesting tactic to take, its is different than carmelo for one reason: Carmelo wanted to leave denver. Even our CEO admitted that he traded Dwill on a "gut" feeling and had no idea if Dwill wanted to stay or go (to those who are positive that Dwill was gone next year, if greg miller had no idea, YOU have no idea). Why not try and convince Dwill to stay and if he doesn't then go to plan B. The Melodrama was bad, but in the end, Denver did get what they want. Their FO tried up to that point to convince him to stay and when he wouldn't relent they traded him. I can live with that at least they tried, the jazz threw in the towel before the fight.

Seems everyone here is pretty happy with what we got in return. Favors does have a lot of upside and having two lotto picks are always nice. Many have commented that Favors might turn into the new Howard....etc. Well lets pretend he does. He becomes one of the top players at his position and its the last year of his contract. We are in same boat as with DWill, will Favors sign with the Jazz?

The jazz gave up on Dwill before even trying and their reward is another promising young talent who they can mold into a great player and then watch as he leaves when his rookie contract is up. It is really hard to convince guys in their prime to stay in a small market and in Utah. So for the Jazz to trade Dwill before even knowing if he wanted to stay or go, is crazy. Everyone's been talking about when Dwill left the jazz next year....., but few people have discussed, what if Dwill wanted to finish his career here in Utah. What if he was the rare superstar who wanted to be here in Utah and we traded him away?

Because D-Will didn't want to go to the Nets. Nets had the best package and was only available now. Now read this next line very carefully: The Nets would never have offered the same assets for D-Will next year if he wouldn't sign an extension.

Basically the Nets have Deron for 1 season + 25 games. They can try to convince him to stay. The Jazz would hardly get the assets they got next year since an extension would be in play. Deron could have told us the 1 - 2 teams he would play for and they could have low balled us.

Also if D-Will wanted to stay here his whole career he would have said so like Kevin Durant has with OKC. You are leaving too much up to chance and in a business that usually means bad things. The franchise did what it had to for the future of their business.

The whole CBA thing and the possibility of a lockout is what made the Jazz make this trade I think. That a long with the Jerry Sloan debacle. I highly doubt there will be anything similar in three years.

The Jazz organization was sick and tired how big of a head Dwill had gotten. The Jazz saw him as a cancer when things werent going well. KOC wanted him gone and his pending free agency was a convenient excuse.

Denver DID NOT get what they wanted out of the trade. Ujiri admitted that they got screwed in the deal and aren't happy with the results, but they got the best they could've because Carmelo made sure he wasn't gonna end up anywhere but NY.

I think there are several factors at play.
1..Deron never said he wanted out. He never said he was committed to the Jazz either.
From listening to Miller, KO, Corbin, You come away with the feeling that they were pretty sure he wasn't going to stay.
2.. I believe there were some serious locker room problems.
3.. I think they wanted to send a message that this is now Ty Corbins team.

Add that all together and the deal was a no brainer.
I think Favors is going to be Great.

The only reason that Denver got what they did out of the Melo deal is the uncertainty of the new CBA. Utah would not have that card next year, so there would be no reason for other teams to even offer what the Jazz got in the deal yesterday. With the new CBA agreed upon, Deron probably just would have ridden out his contract, or the Jazz would have gotten shafted at the trade deadline by teams who felt like they could simply lowball Utah or wait for Williams' contract to run out.

If Deron had declared his loyalty to the team, things could have been different. Instead, he essentially villainized himself in the Sloan departure (a truly sloppy PR job after Jerry left) and hinted that he wanted out. What exactly did the Jazz have to go on that indicated that Williams was still worth building their team around? All of Deron's good will towards the community in the past begins to look disingenuous when a guy refuses to be coached and otherwise acts like a prima donna.

Bottom line: The Jazz took advantage of a team desperate to make a deal after losing out on Anthony. The window was small, but they made the most of their franchise player at a time when they could. Now they have the assets to start rebuilding.

Because hoping for the best has worked out with so many other big time free agents this past year...

And the difference with Favors if he becomes a star? Attitude, I sure as hell hope.

The only reason why Denver got anything out of that Melo deal was the uncertainty of the paycuts in the new CBA and Melo wanting to get paid. We wouldn't have that leverage next season.
