Espn Made a Great Point

They were discussing the winners and losers, and one of the guys made a point that I think is very interesting:

He said he thought the Jazz won the trades because he said that if Derrick Favors was in the draft this year as a sophomore coming out, that he would be the hands down, undisputed #1 pick.

So we trade a Superstar PG, for an All Star Point Guard, and the #1 pick overall.

Oh, and by the way, two other lottery picks!

I so love this trade.

Sorry, but one other point if we kept Deron and we ended the season as the 6-8 seed or out of the playoffs....if Deron hinted at the least that he would not be reupping we would be so stuck because with a Season in Jeopardy would we have gotten what we got yesterday. I highly doubt it.

When I first heard about the trade, I understood why the Jazz made the move and why it was a smart, forward-thinking move, but I wasn't exactly excited about it. I guess this isn't much of a surprise given my user name, but I'd grown quite attached to Deron and I was having a hard time getting excited about "the long term."

As I watched some Favors' highlights today and listened to Jonathan Givony talk about Favors on Locke's podcast, however, I started to get a lot more excited. Big guys with physical tools like that don't come around often and getting one plus a nice PG and some high draft picks in a Deron trade is about as much as I could ask for. Favors seems like he has a good attitude and I'm excited to see him develop. I hope he can learn some things from Sap and Big Al, but I also hope that he doesn't go away from being who he is; that is, I hope he doesn't forget that he's a physical freak who could be a monster around the rim on both ends.

I'll miss Deron, but I'm excited to see what the Jazz can do without the pressure of having to live up to unrealistic pre-season expectations or the uncertainty as to whether Deron would stick around. I want to see this team get out and run and let the young guys (namely Favors and Hayward) play. I don't expect us to make the playoffs, but I don't think it's out of the question by any means. In any case, I'm not going to be as upset about missing the playoffs as I would have been if we hadn't traded Deron and I'm far more optimistic about our future than I was before we traded Deron.
