Question?

Post#1 » by idajazz » Sat Feb 26, 2011 5:21 pm

I should already know this :(
Can the Jazz add another player off of waivers?

"Jason Kapono is expected to get a buyout from the Sixers, several sources said, after playing in just 18 games this season. Still, he’s expected to draw strong interest on the free-agent market from teams in need of another shooter."

here is a guy that can shoot. we need a shooter.

that's a good question.. if Okur cannot come back this season it wouldn't hurt much, or it might cause evans to head to the D-league (but the danger would be taking time away from Flash Gordan)

The Jazz aren't going to add anyone. They were in the middle of the playoff hunt last year and didn't add anyone. There's no way they add someone else this year.

I think they can but it has to be at the pro-rated league min. which means for every dollar its times two since they are over the luxery tax now.

Would you consider getting Kapono a building block for the future? If not there's no reason to pay him double and take away minutes from others. The Jazz are in the playoff hunt, but not the championship hunt.

Also, when it comes to veterans' minimum, the league actually reimburses the team for any amount above the two-year veteran minimum. Only the two-year rate applies to the team salary.

For example, any 3+ year veteran signed to a minimum deal would cost the Jazz roughly 1/4th (23/82 if they signed him today) of $884,293 in paid salary; however the Jazz would add the full amount of $884,293 to their luxury tax bill.

So it would cost the Jazz about $1.1M to add a minimum-salary player to the roster.

I would definitely make a run at him for vet min. IIRC vet min players don't count for lux tax purposes, I could be wrong, but, I recall something about that.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

Yes, you can always offer a vet min contract.

From Larry Coon's FAQ:

MINIMUM PLAYER SALARY EXCEPTION -- Teams can offer players minimum salary contracts even if they are over the cap. Contracts can be up to two years in length. For two year contracts, the second season salary is the minimum salary for that season. The contract may not contain a signing bonus. This exception also allows minimum salary players to be acquired via trade. There is no limit to the number of players that can be signed or acquired using this exception.

This exception begins to reduce in value after the first day of the season. For example, if there are 180 days in the season, then this exception reduces in value by 1/180 of its initial value each day. If a team signs a minimum salary player 90 days into the season, it can pay the player only half the minimum salary.

See question number 73 for more information on how minimum salary players are handled in trade.

Claiming a player off waivers means they assume their salary as it was with the old team. They can't add for the minimum until they clear waivers and then choose your team.

Only championship contenders add players off waivers, we arent in that realm currently.
