What to do with the GS pick

I know the Jazz are technically in rebuilding mode, but I believe we can get more value in trading the warriors pick than we can when we draft a player in 2012.

Some options I have come up with are something along the lines of GS Pick, filler for O.J. Mayo

We could also try to trade Millsap and the GS pick for Granger

What else do you think the Jazz could get for the GS pick?

I'm not into trading Millsap at all. Haven't we already experienced enough of a face lift? I'd be down to get Mayo. Don't know what Memphis would even be looking for during the offseason. Their chances of making the playoffs seem to be increasing as of late.

If the runors are true and there are several college players who don't declare for the draft this year because of the lockout, next years draft should be really deep. A top 10 pick in next years draft could be very valuable. We could endup with a very good player. I definitely wouldn't trade the pick unless we get a sure thing in return. Maybe if we get screwed in this draft and don't end up with a top 6 pick, package the this years pick and the gsw pick to move up in the top 3 to get the player we want and maybe get another asset in return.

BAT makes a very good point about the lack of talent in this years draft because of lock out fears so keeping the pick makes good sense. If there is a player the Jazz definitely want at number 1-3 picks then maybe the Jazz, who will be likely picking 6-7, trade this years pick and the GSW pick to move up to get that player like they did to get DWill. I currently dont see any player I would do that for other than maybe Irving.

Wouldn't just be awesome if we can get Irving in this draft, and get someone next year that could of probably been top 5 had he made himself eligible in 2011? It's funny I never even thought about why the 2011 draft was week, ofcourse the freaking lockout, hey all the better for us!

As mentioned I think we should hold onto the pick unless we can package it for a can't miss. Hopefully the 2011draft doesn't turnout as weak as predicted. I really want Barnes this year but I don't think I would trade next years pick as part of a package for him.

The 2012 draft is going to have a Sophomore age limit which will destroy it, Jazz need to trade the pick.

It kinda depends on if we actually get to use the pick or not. Knowing the Warriors they could easily be bad enough to land in the protected zone next season.

I'm not entirely against trading it but it depends on who we can get for it. I wouldn't mind seeing the Jazz do a deal with Memphis for OJ Mayo if possible...I'm a fan of his. How about GS pick and Bell for OJ? Don't even know if that works but it sounds good for the Jazz.

That's the draft prior to the last lockout, which EVERYONE knew was coming. Yet the top 10 was one of the 3 or 4 most loaded of the past 20 years.

Guys know the money will be there. Even if there's a lockout, they'll get their money. And for the big-time talents, its not just about their rookie season, its about starting the clock ticking so they can get to that 2nd contract, which is where the big money is. All that talk is usually started by college coaches, and NCAA commentators who have a vested interest in the guys staying for another year. I wouldn't believe it. The rule is that if a player is going to go top 10, count on him leaving. Do that, and you'll be right 95% of the time. You can count the guys who have gone back to school when they were projected as lottery picks on one hand over the last 8 years. (Griffin, Ed Davis, Devin Harris, Okafor, CP3...and that's all I can come up with).

Let's look at what class they were in:

1. Michael Olowokandi (Jr.)
2. Mike Bibby (Soph.)
3. Raef LaFrentz (Sr.)
4. Antawn Jamison (Jr.)
5. Vince Carter (Jr.)
6. Robert Traylor (Jr.)
7. Jason Williams (Jr.)
8. Larry Hughes (Fr.)
9. Dirk Nowitzki (Euro - 20 yrs old)
10. Paul Pierce (Jr.)

Lots of juniors; one senior, one freshman and one sophomore. I'm not sure where to put Nowitzki.

The next year looked like this:

1. Elton Brand (Soph)
2. Steve Francis (Jr)
3. Baron Davis (Soph)
4. Lamar Odom (Fr)
5. Jonathan Bender (HS)
6. Wally Szczerbiak (Sr)
7. Richard Hamilton (Jr)
8. Andre Miller (Sr)
9. Shawn Marion (Jr)
10. Jason Terry (Sr)

Three seniors, three juniors, two sophomores, one freshman and one high school kid.

Now compare it with this year's current projected Top Ten (DraftExpress):

1. Kyrie Irving (Fr)
2. Jonas Valanciunas (Euro - 18)
3. Jared Sullinger (Fr)
4. Perry Jones (Fr)
5. Derrick Williams (Soph)
6. Enes Kanter (Euro - 18)
7. Kemba Walker (Jr)
8. Terrence Jones (Fr)
9. Jan Vesely (Euro - 20)
10. Kawhi Leonard (Soph)

Lots of freshmen and sophomores in that group. I think it's apples and oranges (or chalk and cheese if you prefer) to compare the situation of a freshman and a junior when it comes to deciding whether or not to declare for an NBA that appears headed to a lockout.

But who knows... a lot has changed between 1998 and now.

Yes, and in 1998, the trend was to wait until you were a junior to declare. A few were different and stayed until their senior season, a few were over eager and left after their sophomore season. Now, the trend is to leave as soon as you are likely to go in the top 10/lottery/1st round (depending on the quality of player). Look at the 98 draft, and all but LaFrentz had the option of going back to school to develop their game, make a run at the Final Four, or enjoy college life for one more year (all the ridiculous excuses thrown around today for why a guy is going to come back). Yet none of them did. In fact, the only two guys who had legit shots at the top 10 who returned were Andre Miller (had nothing to do with the lockout) and Steve Francis (big-time talent who hadn't put it all together quite yet).

The point is, the lockout had no effect. Are there other factors that could have perhaps influenced the situation? Of course. But if you want an example of how a potential lockout could effect players' decisions to come out, that's the best one available. And it says it didn't mean ****.

I think that's what makes this so hard to figure out.

But I can certainly see how the lockout would end up not having an effect; given how the first-round salary structure works (and assuming this won't change drastically in the new CBA), it's in a player's best interests to get picked as high as possible in the draft (unless you're Gilbert Arenas or Wesley Matthews). In that regard a guy picked in 2011 is going to be subject to the same CBA as a guy picked in 2012, so when it comes to maximizing your draft position the variables remain the same as any other non-lockout year: do you think your odds for getting picked high are better this year or next? Who else is declaring? How badly do you want that Bentley RIGHT NOW? How tired are you of pretending to go to class?

The Wizards have the caproom to absorb Okur if you would throw in that 1st pick. We know we cant compete in 2011/12 and dont forsee any FA spending and Ted Leonsis has shown he'll "buy" picks...ie Hinrich. Interest?

Yeah, seems far too high a pick to be involved in simple off-loading of a contract. With GS, you'll likely see a top 10 pick. Will almost certainly be lottery. For comparison's sake, a similar deal netted OKC the 20th pick in the draft for washed up Matt Harpring's final season. Okur is only 31, and while it might not seem that way at present, still should have some valuable tread left in him.

Nah, it's not going to happen, especially considering that the Jazz are in need of all the young talent they can get their hands on. We'll likely have two top 12 picks this year, and two more top 10 next year. In conjunction with Favors and Hayward, that should net us 3 or 4 core players to build our team around moving forward.

Okur is already an expiring next year. If they had a problem with his salary, they would have tried to trade him in the deadline to avoid paying him for this year.

Fair enough. With the possibility that Washington lands the top pick and Irving being the top player (with Wall we dont need him), what would you be willing to part with that the wiz could use?

Keep in mind we are trying to improve upon this past year but are not counting on competing. Everything but Wall is open for trade.

NJ #6 pick, Favors, 2012 GSW pick for #1 pick, McGee is something that comes to mind.
