think what could have happened if denver made their decision earlier in the year. would it have impacted sloans decision? maybe at that meeting, they told him a deron trade was in the works and he flat out told them, "i dont care"

or other implications: Fields and Felton instead of Favors and Harris? how would that be? it seems that once the melo thing started to turn into a big deal, oconnor was looking to trade deron.

Eh.

I still believe it was more spare of the moment than anything. It doesn't sound like he had his mindset on moving him until they got down to the nuts and bolts of the deal.

Multi-million dollar decisions tend to not be spur of the moment. I'm sure moving Deron had been tossed around in backrooms and the backs of minds for months prior to doing anything.

The actual execution I guess could have been fast, but, I'm confident it wasn't just random.

edfmx86 tossed around a conspiracy theory that doesn't sound so outlandish... what if jazz FO had come to sloan a few weeks before his resignation to tell him they were going to rebuild and were looking to trade DWill? Sloan was completely against trading booz all last season, even if it meant him walking for nothing because he gave the jazz a chance to win NOW. I'm sure his preference would be the same with DWill (regardless of rumors that say otherwise). seeing that the jazz were now going a different direction than what he was willing to go through, he stepped down as the coach.

I for one don't think the trade was spontaneous at all. Jazz FO has a track record far too long of being the most level headed, steady organization in the league.

the thing is, i keep thinking if it was spontaneous. i heard a radio interview with a denver media guy a couple weeks ago. he said that who would you not trade for deron? lebron, wade, kobe, howard. if you asked the gms in charge of rose, paul, or rondo, they would at least have to think about it. the whole trade, (though i think jazz still got a good-not the best-deal) makes me think that they jumped at the first REAL possible scenario.

but this article sounds like o'connor was working the strings of the ny/nj/denver puppets for a at least a few weeks, if not a few months.

I would have loved to have FIelds and Gallinari with the Jazz.

I am highly doubtful they would have ever parted with Landry Fields. He was never a part of the negotiations for Melo.

Anyway, I am happier to have Favors and Harris anyway. Gallinari is overrated IMO and I already explained Fields. Wilson Chandler has an expiring contract and I am not too enamored by Felton.

Favors has a huge future. I think the Jazz were so smart on this deal, I don't even think we realize it fully yet.

I think they might have felt differently if they struck out on Melo. I agree with you on Chandler (good player but expiring and unlikely to be resigned) and Felton (talented but makes many bad decisions with the ball).

I'm happy with the deal we got, just saying if the Nets had gotten Melo and we had dealt with the Knicks I would have loved to have Gallinari and Fields.

Devin Harris said he'd heard runors about going to the jazz pre all-star break, but he thought they had died. Obviously the deal had been discused, but the jazz probably wanted to see what was going on with melo first.

I thought the New York GM talked about how he had no idea Utah was looking to shop Deron?

He has to say those kind of things! Thats interesting what was said about Sloan wanting to not trade Boozer. last year i would have but hey we got AL. After 2008 i said this team is going to be Elite next year. It didnt work out that way. There was a stretch last year though where i thought the Jazz could have made a run for the Finals. I hope to god in two years im saying the same things about this core. We will findout what they want the core to be for this team this offseason. Still some people going elsewhere i think. It was just time for D-will to go. I would love to drft Walker if we can get him,but he is already saying he wants to go home to NY.
