Memo "I Pushed It Backfired"

Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor said in a press relase today "We're going to shut Mehmet Okur down for the rest of the year. We've tried everything. He's tried everything. He's disappointed and discouraged that he couldn't be back because he wants to help the team.". We spoke with Mehmet Okur who obviously was very disappointed and he summarized his feelings by saying "I pushed, I sacrificied as I wanted to play and everytime it back fired.". Memo said that he had been practicing with the team for the last couple of weeks although he was not taking part in full contact drills, and added that for 2-3 days I would feel fine but after that he would have difficulty in moving. Memo added that "After the surgery I guess I did not give my left leg to get as strong as it needed it to get. I wanted to play and I hated not being part of the team. However since my left leg was not at the necessary strength after I started pushing it started effecting the other side of my body and eventualy my lower back. I thought I was getting back and there would nice run of days when I felt good but as soon as I switched gears for a couple of days pain would follow. Club doctor Dr Lyle Mason and Dr Graham Hill decided that the best thing would be to shut me down and start rehab on my lower back. I will continue treatment and with the rehab program I hope that I will be back at full strength in a couple of months.".

Memo also said that he met with coach Tyrone Corbin and talked in detail before finalizing the decision and the recommendation of the doctors. Memo said that "I have been working out with coach Corbin for the 7 years that I have been in Salt Lake City one on one, sometimes before sometimes after practices. Whenever I felt that I needed to work extra on my game he was always there. He has had a very important role in my development as a NBA player since I have been a member of the Jazz family. I told him I felt terrible that I have not been able to give him any support on the court since he has become coach. He said that he wished I was there helping the team on the court, but injuries happen and the important thing is to get over them. To keep mentaly tough. He said that what was important is that I get back to % 100 and be ready to go at full strength and completely healthy for next season. He also said not to get down, and do exactly what the doctors tell me, and that he wanted a % 100 ready to go Memo in training camp.".

When we asked Memo if this injury was a career threatning injury he said that "I spoke about this possibility with my doctors. They are both very open and excellent doctors. They said that with rehab and treatment I would be back to a % 100. I have a couple of rough couple of months ahead of me and a long summer. I worked so hard to get ready for this season, I sacrificied and got nothing in return. I hope that it will not repeat and that I get to % 100 healthy by the end of the summer. I want to play, I want to contribute and I want to win next season.".

I have no doubts about Memo's professionalism, so I'm sure he's worked as hard as he could to try and recover from his injury so far and will continue to do so in the future. Hopefully it will be enough for him to come back and be at least a serviceable player again.

It is too bad. He is a likeable guy. I hope that he does comeback well next season.

I just want him and his contract to return to Turkey.

Turks have a history of playing through injury and it backfires often.

I still think he's going to come back and play at a pretty high level....... This is obviously a setback though.......

I think he will come back next year and be a great bench player, sig again for a vet min. contract and then retire a Jazz man.
