Cleveland, Minn, & Detroit trade rumor :(

The Cleveland Cavaliers are in discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons about a three-team trade that would give Cleveland the top two picks of next month's NBA draft.

The Cavaliers would use the picks to select Duke point guard Kyrie Irving and Arizona forward Derrick Williams, the sources said.

In the trade being discussed, Cleveland would absorb Detroit's Richard Hamilton into the $14.6 million trade exception it received in last summer's LeBron James sign-and-trade with Miami, while also receiving the Pistons' No. 8 pick. The Cavaliers would then send that pick, along with their fourth pick, to Minnesota for the Timberwolves' second pick.

Cleveland would then buy Hamilton out of the $25 million remaining in the last two years on his contract, leaving the veteran shooting guard free to sign with another club as a free agent.

There go our dreams of Minn picking Kanter at #2 and Williams slipping to us (maybe not all of our dreams). Pretty crafty of the Cavs if they get this done. I think Detroit gets kinda screwed here, but hey w/ever. I get that they get out of Rip's contract, but his contract is only for 2 more years (and it's for about $12 Million each year not the albatross that was AK) and how are they going to build anything giving up a decent lottery pick?

Also, wasn't there a deal earlier in the year that sent Rip to Cleveland but he refused because he didn't want to be bought out and lose money?

Thoughts?

Update:

Detroit has denied that they would accept this deal as currently constructed. It could happen, but more would have to be added.

If this is their way of getting back at lebron, they aren't doing a very good job.

why ? Gilbert is rich guy, is his money, and probably Cavs will be immediate very strong team, we should rather be sad that Miller is not willing to pay like that to improve Jazz.

I don't think the buyout would be for the full $25 mill. If we believe ShamSports the final $12.5 mill is not guaranteed so Cleveland would be paying out almost all of 1 year (I'd suppose) in exchange for the opportunity to become a free agent and play for whoever he wants.

Honestly, Dan Gilbert has the money, I think if he can pull it off, he would be a genius.

I think the trade is going to suck for a team like us, but I don't think we're going to get Derrick Williams regardless, because someone else is going to get him at #2. If the Cavs pull off a trade like this, they could be a contending team down the road.

PG - Irving, Sessions
SG - ?
SF - Williams
PF - Hickson
C - Varejao

That's already a really solid core, I imagine they're going to have to get rid of Baron Davis or Sessions, Davis would be the better choice to get rid of, but he has an ugly contract. Hickson might be a really solid trade piece if Williams needs to be playing PF instead of him, even then you could move Hickson to C, and Varejao be a guy off the bench.

I just don't love that duo. I think either valanciunas or kanter match better with irving than Williams does. Yeah Williams and Irving are the best two players, but that might be a strange dynamic to put these guys into. That's a lot of pressure for both guys to perform, get one doing well, and another struggling and you create a weird tension that you don't want on rookies.

Detroit denies trade rumor:

UPDATE
Pistons Not Interested In Richard Hamilton Trade To Cavs

Multiple people shot down Chris Broussard's report about the Detroit Pistons being in talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves about a three-team trade that would send Richard Hamilton to Cleveland. A few hours later, Broussard himself said the Pistons aren't interested in making the deal as it's currently proposed.

Detroit won't do 3-team deal as proposed. Would need to get players back in return for Rip and 8th pick...stay tuned

David Aldridge said on Twitter that there is "absolutely no chance" of this "supposed" deal happening. As Aldridge pondered, why would the Pistons give up a first-round pick to get rid of Hamilton? It doesn't make a ton of sense from their perspective, as they would be giving up an awful lot just to move Hamilton.

The Detroit Free Press' Vincent Ellis, who was one of the first people to deny the Pistons were in talks, wrote an article about why the move "makes no sense" for the Pistons. While they would get some freed up cap room, it's not a good deal at all for the Pistons, which explains why they aren't apparently as interested as Broussard initially thought.

Maybe they will do it. But like I said in another thread, Detroit gets screwed in the deal. It could happen, but Detroit would have to get something in return.

i dont know maybe you are right but imo that is looking for a fake problem, Irving is pg Williams is pf- they are definitively two best players in that draft, at least for now, they are playing on positions which are complementary, Irving is great play maker so his good game will make Williams productive, it's totally no brainer to pick them both in one package.

I'm not saying those aren't the two guys you take first and second, obviously they are. However I don't know if those ate the guys you sell the farm for. That is alot of cash for two unprovens. High risk, high reward I guess.

actually, Cleveland's owner is proving to be pretty awesome -- if you're a cavs fans.

He said he'd do everything he could to get the Cavs a title, and he's putting his money hwere his mouth is.

- paying 30 million (ie baron davis) for a lotto pick?
- willing to pay $25 million to secure D.Will?

He's the type of owner I'd like to have, as a fan.

Williams is about as known of a commodity as there is available through the draft these days. As a fan, I would rather see my owner take this approach than traipse out some veterans who are good, but not stars, and whose play may not justify their contracts.

It actually seems quite shrewd to utilize their salary exception in such a way that they land the two best players by far in a two player draft. Pretty impressive gesture towards the fans in Cleveland. If we can't land land Williams and this deal goes through, I hope it works out for them.

I would have rather seen him put this money around lebron when he was there. They did such a poor job putting talent around him, it was absurd. They spent some money when lebron was there, but they certainly weren't buying lottery picks to give him actual talent to grow with. Dan Gilbert sucks.
