Millsap
to Detroit
Brandon Knight
Resign AK to play the SF/PF and allow minutes for the young guys Kanter/Favors. What this also will do is help Okur's trade value. If Okur comes back he needs minutes. Then we could look at one or two options. One would be to eventually trade Okur at the Trade Deadline for a pick. Although I kind of like the idea of keeping Okur on the cheap if he is healthy for a string of 1 and 2 year contracts to backup our young core of bigs, and then trade Jefferson next year if the young bigs are progressing quickly for the stud wing we need.
The concern with trading Millsap is what if the youngs aren't ready? The concern with not trading him is the youngs never get the time to prove that they are ready. I think Detroit would do this deal, but it also makes resigning AK imperative as he is the familiar Jazz face that needs to be on the team. The money we save in the trade can be re-spent on AK's contract.
AK I believe went downhill because of a double whammy of Boozer coming in and taking most of his PF minutes, and then Millsap taking the rest, which left AK alone on the perimeter. With AK on the team we don't have to worry as much about Okur being healthy and maybe we resign Fes or another role playing big until Kanter and Favors really step it up.
It might be best to have Millsap as the best 6th man in the league, but two big questions arise from that: 1) It would prevent us from getting Knight 2) Is Millsap willing to accept that role
Sure Knight gives us one more youngin' on this team but at least we maintain our core of Jefferson Harris/AK/Okur as our veteran leadership. Besides we aren't contending now and I would rather start grooming Knight. We should have moved up to get Knight when he was slipping in the draft, and now it will take Millsap to do it but that is the play I would make.
Thoughts.

Makes less sense for Detroit. I think they value Knight and will let Stuckey go.

At this juncture, I believe Jefferson is the one destined to move on. Kanter duplicates his skills and physical attributes more so than Millsap's. One or two season behind Jefferson will serve Kanter well in his development, then Al can be moved for a PG, making Harris expendable as well.
Millsap can continue play valuable minutes at the 3 & 4, anchoring the second unit and closing games in certain situations. I'm far from sold on Knight, and for the next few seasons Harris will be far more effective. We don't need to rush and fill a position already manned by a skilled veteran, and IMO we would be foolish to relinquish a player of Millsap's caliber on a reasonable contract for an unknown, unproven quantity.
