OT:Salt Lake City locked out! thread 1: Bars!

Post#1 » by DelaneyRudd » Tue Jul 12, 2011 8:27 am

Well, we gotta do something right? Lets talk about Salt Lake and the best of the bar scene.

We can also talk about bar politics which since Huntsman decided to be normal as governor, then piss off the Republicans by treating the President with statesmanly respect, we may have some strife.

I am a big fan of bars and pretty much hang out in Sugarhouse. I am a big fan of knowing your barkeep. I've lost track of the downtown scene. The Suburban bars are foreign to me.

Anyways, we will see how this thread goes, talk about your favorite spots. If you aren't from Utah and want to visit someday ask questions. We will get to topics like restaurants, grocery stores, malls, whatever as this lull passes.

Here in St George, we literally only have one bar. It's called The One and Only.

Okay, I don't think I'll be visiting Utah or the rest of the USA any time soon, but here's a stupid question some of you might be bored enough to answer.

What do people even drink at bars in Utah? What sorts of beer, any wine? Any regional cocktails? Should I order something in particular if I ever go to a bar in Utah?

You should get a local beer, especially Epic Beers. I also recommend an Underground Bomb if you are ready to rock.

Ironically, Utah has some of the best tasting microbrews in the country IMO.

We have more than one. There is that firehouse bar or whatever connected to the bowling alley. And then there are a few bars in the Mexican resturaunts like Pepper's and Casa Dona Maria.

Port O Call.

RIP.

Green Street is gone too. The pretentious places of my youth are being replaced by places like Gracies.

Now that's I'm a working man I go to drinkin bars, not primpin bars.

In my hood, Sugarhood, I got 3 places. The Tap Room where I am a regular and know everyone; The A Frame, aka The Bar In Sugarhouse, which is a nice change of pace bar. Really tiny, usually firendly but sometimes provincial. Then theres the new kid Sugar House Pub which started small and has just opened their huge expansion. It's turning into Green Street with no parking. (They hired a bunch of Green Street staff)

They have no food though, besides the legal minimum. They have room for a small fry station kitchen. They should do it since it's a pretty busy place now. They would be a real threat to Fiddlers with that. Fiddlers is for old people with money.

They are pricey at the bars, but they are 22 ounces so, it's like getting 2 12 oz bottles (almost). Per ounce they end up about the same as Stella or Newcastle.

I just went to the new expansion of the Sugar House Pub, it reminds me of Poplar 2.0.

It's nice to be with in walking distance of it, though it's already losing some of it's small bar charm.

Mondays at Tap Room at 75 cent Pabst days. It's a good promotion because eventually I will get sick of cans and just go for the 2.75 drafts. and then get a Underground Bomb. (Ogden's Own Underground with Redbull)

I wonder if they will continue to do that now that daily drink specials are illegal. The law, which went into effect July 1st, prohibits daily drink specials on liquor, wine and beer.

Here's the way around...

It's not a special price. It's just the only day they offer to sell Pabst in a can. A lot of lesser brands will get some pub in Utah now. Any bar that wants a special will have to find a new product they don't sell and just give it at a better price on one day only. Evan Williams seems to be the big winner. Everyone will know Evan as it's the best cheap whisky and bars will have Evan days.

It's a hard loop hole to fill because if you run out of something, you can't sell more. They can't say you have to offer a product every day.
