Via multiple sources, the Utah Jazz are expected to announce Sidney Lowe as the new assistant coach.

Edit: Now officially confirmed.

Sidney Lowe had sex with my uncle's ex-girlfriend.

It's a good hire if it's true. He has head coaching experience. He also went to college with Big T.

Well, Lowe isn't the one the best coaches in the world, but I guess most assistants aren't--unless you're Phil Johnson.

He does have a lot of experience on losing teams. That might come in handy if the Jazz don't turn the corner soon.

Hopefully this means Scott Layden to the end of the bench, and then maybe back to New York's front office.

In all fairness, he was the coach of some pretty horrendous teams. I doubt his coaching record is an accurate representation of his abilities.

Not sure why you're hating on Scott though...

What did Scott do that was so right? Can you spell the word nepotism?

I sure hope not! I would like to see him in charge of defense.

I think that's what I said. He has a lot of experience with losing teams. I guess his NC State record of 86-78 overall and only 25-55 in the ACC and 7-33 on the road doesn't accurately reflect his coaching abilities. After all he only had five years.

Some coaches make great assistants but are lousy head coaches.

SLCtrib tweeted that the Jazz plan on hiring a player development coach once the season starts.

Well, Hap, I hope you're right. Sidney Lowe has a lot of friends and Corbin happens to be one of them. His friends have kept in the coaching business a long time. But if you look at his record as both a player and coach, he didn't play for any single NBA team very long. And he only had one 5 year run as an assistant. So he has a habit of not staying anywhere very long. I don't know if that was his choice or it was someone else's decision.

He getting older and he knows he's running out of chances so I'm sure he'll work hard. If Corbin likes him that makes him compatible. I also don't think he'll be competing for a head coaching job anytime in the near future. He's certainly is a better coach than Scott Layden--who shouldn't be in coaching. He has more experience coaching than Hornacek, and he knows the game so I expect he'll work out.

I thought Scott Layden was a position coach--or ah player development coach! Oh, you probably mean a good position coach. Yeah, the Jazz need that.

Everybody
Why are you hating on Scott?

I'm not hating on Scott. After spending 25 years in this business I have an opinion on who should be on a bench and who shouldn't. The wrong people on a bench can and do cause problematic decision making. I just think Scott has talents that could be better used in the front office. Especially a front office in New York or New Jersey.

"tribjazz Brian T. Smith
Jazz have plans to hire player development coach. Hinges on start of season, though. Nothing imminent."

Whatever they mean. Is the position coach and player development coach the same thing?

It sounded to me like the speculation was to have Sidney Lowe come in to replace what corbin's job used to be behind Jerry and Phil, which was to be to coach the players could relate to more and go to for off the floor issues or locker room stuff while the head coach and first assistant focus more on basketball stuff.

This would make sense with the gluttony of young players we have on the team, and the fact that he has a ton of experience with college kids, and doesn't look like that picture of Scott layden.

Well, I have a business interest in a hot date chat line that accepts credit cards. If you would like that number, I can give it to you.

The more I've heard about him/from him, the more comfortable I've become with the hire.

All signs point to him being a great coach and I feel like he can do a good job of being that buffer for the players for when Corbin needs to come down on them. Overall he sounds like a good assistant coach and a good guy to have around young players and the chemistry with the organization should help.
