Who do the Jazz wave(goodbye to)?

Post#1 » by QuantumMacgyver » Mon Oct 17, 2011 1:07 am

Something being considered in the new CBA is the option for teams to cut one contract every 2 or 3 years while paying out that contract over several years, and NOT have it affect their salary cap. (I believe it would be the new "Amnesty" clause.)

Also, the new luxury tax is expected to be about $63 million, and the Jazz are already committed to $63 million in contracts.

If the Jazz chose to wave one contract, who do y'all think it would/should be?

If amnesty allows for salary cap cuts, it'll be Bell. If it's just luxury tax cuts, it will be no one since the Jazz won't pay Okur ten million to go away when they're already under the tax.

And either Bell or no one depending on who's available for the year and what the CBA ends up being.

No one. I really wish they would dump Bell, but I just don't see it happening.

I don't think the Jazz would waive Bell. He's definitely not performing at an acceptable level, but if they can only waive one player every 2-3 years, I don't see them using it on $6 million over two years. It seem smote likely they'd use it on Big Al if anybody, and with the new CBA I wonder if they would have to.

They're not going to pay 29 million dollars to Al Jefferson for him to go away.

I was under the impression it was a one time use it or lose it deal. If it's something that can be kept in the back pocket then no one.

An interesting idea is the ability to trade your waive card. It could net a fairly good piece back from a rich team.

I think if anything they would allow us to take on a contract and use the clause, but not trade it. If it could be traded, I'm sure Orlando would be desperate to move everyone outside of Dwight for "waive cards" (or whatever they'd be called).

Yeah, but that would likely out price them from getting too many. You can't trade consecutive draft picks, and it's not like they have a ton of players others are clamoring for.
Plus there would only be 30 total. There's plenty more draft picks, not to mention that of the 30 a lot of teams will use them. I could see the value being a lotto pick.

Unlikely that you could trade a waiver, or waive a player you traded for after a certain date.

I would think it would be okur. He's old, coming off an injury, and would just be in the way of kanter, favors, Jefferson and millsap.

Getting 10 million off the books this year allows the jazz to ad a few back up players with out going over the tax.

You could add 3 $3,000,000 players and be in a better spot than just holding onto memo, and we need another pg, and probably another 2/3.

They still have to pay him, and there's not a target free agent worth tossing money for. As long as they are under the tax, there's no reason to exercise this on an expiring player without a real shot at a specific target.

But they are going to have to sign other guys to fill holes in the roster.

Right now, even with kanter and burks the jazz only have 11 guys under contract.

Harris
Bell/burks
Hayward/miles
Favors/millsap/Evans
Jefferson/okur/kanter

We need at least one player to give us the league minimum 12 players. Assuming that probably has to be a pg, we are already going into luxury tax area. Then you probably want to add at least one more wing player, preferably someone who can shoot and you've already added 2 players that you are likely paying double for anyways since you are over the tax.

So, dump okur, take 10 million off the salary books, (even though you still have to pay him) and add a few guys to fill holes with out paying double for them.

They're just going to sign a couple replacement level players since the two to the three million a year group isn't really better than D-League guys.

Earl Watson is the only player that group needs to compete for a 7-8th seed. There's no one out there realistically that will get them higher than that. Tanking isn't in the cards though. This is a better team than that.

The Jazz went 10-30 to finish the season with most of the same core other than rookies and rookies don't improve a team's win total even if they're on the level of John Wall or Kevin Durant. There could be trades to make the team better, but I doubt the team comes very close to the playoffs.

Half the team was injured! Harris played 17 out of a possible 29 games to finish the season, Kirilenko in 14 of 30, Millsap even missed 6 games, Raja was injured, Memo was out the entire year....that pretty much left Jefferson, Millsap, Miles and the rookies to finish out the season. With those players healthy and the rookies developing I expect us to compete for the playoffs. Will we make them? Probably not, but we'll at least get close. If there is a full season I expect around a 42-40 season or so.
