If I'm not mistaken wouldn't this be just about the worst possible scenario for the Jazz? We wouldn't get a pick at all... right?

GSW would keep their pick by one slot. Jazz would lose their pick by 4 spots. Right?

If they go by record over last three years combined with previous lottery success, then yes, the Jazz would have no draft picks in the 2012 draft if there's a canceled season.

Yes, that would be a disaster. However, if the rule is also changed to force players to wait two years before entering, this might actually be a good thing, as the 2012 would suddenly go from one of the most loaded to one of the most shallow overnight.

In that event, I would rather wait a year and get two selections in a better draft.

I'd be shocked if we don't get a season this year. But the talk of a mandatory 2 year college career could screw the jazz over for the second consecutive draft. Last year the lockout prevented several players from declaring, this year we could miss out on an even better freshman class when we could potentially have two top 10 picks.

I still think the most accurate and self-correcting method for determining draft order (with or without a lockout) is to have the GM's vote on the draft order. They will all naturally be inclined to make sure the worst team gets the best pick

That would be a good idea if their weren't conferences or divisions. However, since there are each western conference team will simply put each eastern conference team 1-15, and vice versa.

Going to be interesting to see if the Jazz pick a guy like Quincy Miller, Michael Gilchrist, or Austin Rivers in next year's draft. Those guys really don't seem like they would fit with Burks so they may have to decide on Burks' future by next June.

I think Gilchrist would fit in really well next to both Burks and Hayward.

I really have a hard time seeing the NBA doing the combined win %'s over the last X amount of seasons for the draft order after so much power was re-aligned. Miami would probably end up with a pick above or close to the Cavs pick.... that just doesn't make any sense. Same for the Knicks.

But yes, the Jazz would get shafted extremely hard if that's how things went.

I'm personally hoping for Austin Rivers or Barnes but there are plenty of really intriguing prospects out there. It's actually funny that so many are big men... exactly what we don't need and I remember during the last draft a lot of the experts were saying that "no quality bigs are coming down the line in the upcoming drafts". Right... only 6 of the projected top 10 are bigs.

I'm excited to watch all these guys for the college season though... should be fun to see who rises and who drops. There's always surprises.

Outside of the Salt Lake Tribune, did anyone really say that no quality bigs were coming in the future?

Ya, I'm pretty sure on the live broadcast during the draft the analysts brought that up a few different times. I clearly remember someone on ESPN saying that, just can't remember exactly who or when.

I think this should just be turned into a 2012 draft watch thread and stickied. It's about all we have to look forward to for now, and the only basketball we might see this year could be college and Euroleague. I would love to see us draft Bradley Beal. I think with the amount of ball handlers we have he could easily play shooting guard and point guard and give us that true perimeter threat we haven't had. Burks and Hayward are good, but having Beal too? :)

I'm an early fan of Thomas Robinson even though we don't need another big.

I think Terrence Jones would still be a good fit for us too. I'm excited to see how his game has developed going into this year.

Is there anyone that can explain to me what happens to the Golden State pick if the Warriors finish top 7 in the draft order? Do we lose the pick? Or does it become a later pick another year?

Also, what is this about us not getting a pick of our own? Im a little out of date on the non-player assets we hold and their conditions. Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

The pick would be kept by the Warriors and they owe the Jazz a 2013 pick unless that was also top 7 and so on. The Jazz will surrender their pick to the Wolves if the Jazz's pick is outside of the lottery because of the Al Jefferson trade.

I don't think it's a given that we'd lose the GS pick. It might actually work out perfectly for us at #8, depending on whether they weigh each year equally, and other possible criteria. It's close enough that I think it could go either way. Here's some info from a thread on the trade board.

Only 10% chance GSW gets a top 3 spot after lottery, so there's 90% chance GSW gives up their pick (72.4% 8th pick, 16.8% 9th pick)

Lets hope so... cause losing both our picks in this next draft would be horrible (assuming there is no season).

If we get the GS pick at #8 I can live with losing the Jazz pick.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

There is going to be a season, so as nice as this would be, we are going to have to have a third straight year with a follow another team thread stickies at the top of the board.

Who really knows how well the warriors will play, but I think we can safely say that these teams should be worse than golden state.

Sacramento
Minnesota
Cleveland
Washington

Those teams I think you can count on being terrible.

Then there is another tier of teams that is close to as bad or worse.

Toronto
New jersey
Detroit
Milwaukee

Any 8 of the teams I mentioned have a very good shot at being worse than the warriors. Hopefully Mark Jackson keeps see guys just decent enough to get into the 8-11 spots so the jazz get another good pick.
