As if we haven't had enough bad NBA news coming from the lockout lately...

I was about to go to bed when this lovely article popped up on the realgm front page... I'm not so tired anymore. Personally, I have a really hard time comprehending the Millers ever selling the Jazz. Unless Greg really fell far from the Larry tree, the Jazz should be here in Utah under the Miller family name for many more generations.

Discuss.

I'd be on suicide watch for sure.

But i think (or i want to think) that this article is bull. Doesnt say anything about the Millers saying they would sell.

This is what happens when NBA journalists have nothing to write about.

Agreed, I'm not buying this article at all.

If it was sold to Checketts, I think the franchise would stay too. He already owns Real Salt Lake, he worked for the Jazz, he seems like a Utah guy.

Um, lots of businesses have bad years, the Jazz have a bright future, stupid to sell low.

LHM bought the entire club for $26.8 million and add in whatever portion of the $93 million stadium he picked up. In the face of chronic annual losses, it's a no brainer to sell for current value of $340 millionish, especially considering the looming threat of higher taxes on capital gains.

Owning a small market franchise is a billionaire's hobby.

Greg Miller
Speculation of the Jazz being sold is unfortunate & irresponsible. Thanks to unprecedented fan & sponsor support the Jazz is solid as ever.

Their player expenditure was over 80 million. It's their own fault for giving Okur that contract rather than letting him become a FA. Smart money says to let him walk. Had they brought in the same revenue this season, without Okur, they could have profited over $10 million dollars.

Wont happen, Unless the players get to continue on this old way of doing business. I would not blame him for selling, how many millions a year would you be willing to spend owning a NBA team. The millers should make something off of this team.

How many years of you seeing your team let players walk or not affording to resign them (wesley) because of money, when your chief rival (lakers) keep picking up more talent. (artest, blake, barnes)

How many years do you want to see the best players refuse to go here and when you draft a best player he ends up leaving.

I dont think they will let the team go, but this reset has to happen.

We can keep our drafted players for 7 yrs. Thats a long time. If they want to go after that then I thinks thats ok. Not all will but some may walk. Right now with this team and the young talent, with a 6-7 yr window to make a title run seems about right.
Matthews got over paid and Milsap turned out to be a good deal. Any team in the NBA would like his deal. The Jazz have spent money for yrs to try and contend.
Making the playoffs is a must to make profits. A one to two yr window to get back isn't to much to ask of the Jazz. Plus they have said that they have saved money for this kind of thing anyway. In a yr or two this team will be right back in the playoff hunt and all will be well in Jazz land...

the article was written with the lockout in mind. im sure he was trying to strengthen the owners stance. greg miller saying the jazz are solid as ever may be good for the fans to hear, but if the club is doing just fine, then why the lockout?

Its typically teams in larger markets with more competition for the sports buck who are in worse shape. The Jazz, Spurs, Blazers and Thunder are not close to moving or folding. The only one team town that is hurting is the Kings and they will likely survive due to strong local support. Their issues go to the larger economy and inner-California being in rough shape.

The Jazz are the backbone of the LHM industry. If they ever sold the team and it was moved out of state all of the LHM industries would plummet. I doubt they ever sell the team and if they do they have to have 100% assurance it won't move.

I have a buddy who works at one of the Miller Car Lots - he was telling me last year the automotive side is used to subsidize the Jazz whenever necessary. The automotive side of LHMG is massive and is obviously the most profitable entity of the organization.

Also: * LHM Motor Park is a perpetual money loser. Sure, not $14MM loser. However, the LHMG is
going to keep that running for the foreseeable future.

* With the large contracts off the books (AK47), we would not be $14MM in the hole this season (if we have one). I understand other salaries will go up and a position replaced on the team.

* The article doesn't say anything about the team moving. I understand if an outside buyer purchased the Jazz, and had league approval the Jazz would be moved. Again, the story was only about the team potentially being sold, not moved.

* Last point relates to my intro - as long as the automotive side continues to be a cash cow, and the losses are manageable for a short time - the Jazz stay in the Miller family and stay in Utah.
