Excellent thread. I'm excited for this to get someone, and I really hope we don't just let it expire.
I don't know all the rules about TPEs. They can't be combined in other trades, right?

Can't be combined with a player's salary, but could be use in a trade with other players. Here's an example.
Here is a more complicated example of a legal non-simultaneous trade a team has a $4 million Traded Player exception from an earlier trade, and a $10 million player it currently wants to tradeAnother team has three players making $4 million, $5 milli on and $7 million, and the teams want to do a three-for-one trade with these players. This is legal -- the $5 million and $7 million players together make less than the 125% plus $100,000 allowed for the $10 million player ($12,600,000), and the $4 million player exactly fits within the $4 million Traded Player exception. So the $4 million player actually completes the previous trade, leaving the two teams trading a $10 million player for a $5 million and a $7 million player. From the other team's perspective it's all just one big simultaneous trade: their $4 million, $5 million and $7 million players for the $10 million player.

I'm surprised he left Kirk Hinrich off the list. Hawks are going with Teague as starting PG and they're loaded at the 2. Hinrich is the odd-man out and makes 8mil (but he is expiring so trade-able). Even still, I'm sure The Hawks would be more than willing to let Utah take Hinrich off their hands

And what are we going to do with Hinrich?

I love Kirk Hinrich, but we already have Harris and Watson at the 1 and I'm hoping Hayward eats up most of the minutes at SG.

Let's talk about this.
What position we need? Of course we will not get star player for this TPE. Only a good role player or good starter.

I've always liked Hinrich's game and thought he would do well here. I like the idea of jettisoning CJ, cutting Tinsley and giving Hinrich minutes at the one and two. He would be great alongside either Harris or Burks as a playmaker and perimeter shooter.
This would allow Hayward plenty of time at the 3, and Howard would provide a huge spark off the bench. Millsap gets his minutes too, primarily at 4, but sliding to 3 depending on matchups. Evans and Watson provide energy, excitement, and change of pace.
Tremendous flexibility here-- with solid defense, potent offense, youthful exuberance and veteran leadership. Seriously, given a little time to gel, this is a team ready to compete for a playoff spot:
Jefferson/ Kanter
Favors/ Millsap/ Evans
Hayward/ Howard
Hinrich/ Burks
Harris/ Watson

Reasons for the jazz to use the tpe
1. The team is performing well enough that they look like real contenders
They wont bring in another player because it might screw it up. (Let's see how this team can do)
2. Option 1 and we have a critical injury.
This is the most likely.. but if se are doing that well, how many other teams will be helping has out.
3. We have a star we must keep happy.
Not next year
I bet it goes unused. Since the jazz wont want to spend the money and take minutes away from youngsters

His salary is less than that, expires after this season. Gotta have some experience, smarts, and refined skills to help all the individual potential develop and collective talent to gel. Hinrich would help these pieces become a team.
Not to mention the fact that this move would give us the personnel flexibility to move Harris in a package with Jefferson, for instance. Gotta look at the big picture in regards to both basketball and business issues when making personnel decisions, and I like this move all around.

I think the TPE is going to be used to help another team shed salary while picking up a potentially good down the road player, ie a draft pick or a high potential project player......

I agree. As much as I like some players who may be available, I think the exception will be converted into picks or young guys.

Does the 125% + $100k rule apply to TPEs? For instance, can we trade a $10mil TPE straight across for a $12.6mil/year player?

No it doesn't. You get the TPE plus 100K. In a non-simultaneous trade you get less money but more time.

I don'r expect this exception to be used until draft time (if ever). The exception allow the Jazz to trade a pick for a player, which is usually impossible due to salary restrictions.

I think the Jazz could use it to trade up in the draft (like trading up to the Pistons pick or something by taking back Ben Gordon's contract). TPEs aren't very valuable right now to rebuilding teams though because most teams got rid of their bad contracts either in preparation for the new CBA or through amnesty.

It may come in handy at the trade deadline. Pick up something for facilitating a trade like Dwight Howard.

This is what I feel as well. Just like the idea of helping to facilitate the Dwight Howard to NJ idea.
