Non-traditional rotation for Corbin

http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/217884/Jazz_Plan_To_Use_13_Man_Rotation"We've got a 12-13 man rotation right now," Corbin said. "We want everybody to start ready. We can dress 13 and we want 13 to be ready to go."
This could be part of the confusion and disorganization we saw in the first game against the Lakers. How can you have a manageable rotation of 13 players? How does anyone know who they are playing with and how do you develop any kind of rapport?

Seriously, it was weird seeing EVERYONE play last night. I'm used to seeing the proven guys play while our rookies sit at the end of the bench and get slowly introduced. Just seems like too many combinations out there, no one can really get settled.

I trust that Corbin knows what he's doing.

I'm looking at the non-traditional approach and the results and becoming suspicious. His overall record now is 8-21 as a coach. While I agree it is too early to grade his results, I'm not seeing the authoritative control and decision-making that we've been used to for decades under Sloan. Like his decisions or not, you knew where Sloan stood when it came to rotations and playing time. With Corbin I don't have that same feeling yet.

I think a lot of that comes from having everything dumped in his lap with absolutely no notice last season. Now he's had an offseason to regroup and come back with a cohesive gameplan, lets hope that last night wasn't truly indicative of that...

We have the wrong coach for this team. Reggie Miller even said last night during the telecast that he didnt know why the Jazz dont try to fast break after every basket made or not made, and Corbin's response was that he wanted to run but also have a half court game...and Reggie Miller thought Why? I agree times have changed in Utah. We have an extremely young extremely athletic team that can run the court but doesnt run the court enough and seems to be thinking too much on the court. We need a Paul Westpaul/fast breaking system and NOT Corbin, a Sloan guy, who may want to run on occasion when its there. I say run whether it is there or not. We CANNOT score in the half court offense. Figure out the half court during next years training camp not during this season.

In one of my previous maligned posts I said that there are 1287 lineup combinations with 13 players. Corbin seems to be trying them all. I agree so much mix and match is a problem. The team won't get continuity, coordination or a harmonious rhythm if he keeps switching around. That bothers me.
On the issue of not running last night. That's a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. I agree the Jazz can run with Harris, Favors and Hayward in the lineup. But I would do it with Hayward at the 2 and CJ in the 3.
I saw two very clear reasons for not running last night.
1. Running can hurt a shaky defense.
2. 6 games in 8 days with late night trip to Denver. Getting in a 4 am makes recovery for a 7 pm (Utah time) game tough.
Even if the Jazz had run they would not have beaten the Lakers. At least not last night.
As far as changing coaches go, that won't happen until 2013 at the earliest, and probably not until 2014. So buckle up.

At this point, I'm rooting for at least a #4 pick for Utah, and a new coach by the next season.
I'm generally one of the more positive people on these boards too, but I honestly just do not understand what Corbin is doing out there. I'm not over reacting, either. What we saw last night from Coach Corbin was atrocious.

Corbin needs to change the rotation to this. Also, he needs to ditch this 10 man rotation on some nights, a lot of teams do 8-9 man rotations.
Starting Line-Up
------------------------
PG - Harris
SG - Hayward
SF - Howard
PF - Favors
C - Jefferson
Bench
----------
PG - Watson
SG - Burks
SF - Miles
PF - Millsap
C - Kanter

I don't think Corbin is really going to run that many players all season. He's still figuring out combinations that work well together.
Lets revisit this thread in 25 games and judge.

I like utah fann 88 rotation. I would flip Hayward and Howard depending on who the shooting guard is. Howard is a better defender. That leaves Evans as first of three bench players to come in when needed. Just sit Bell or waive or trade him for another big man

The rest of this article points out that the league is allowing for a 13 man rotation for the first 2 months. Corbin is going to see who earns it and let them play. Remember... minimal training camp and minimal practices this year.

From my perspective, shorter training camp and only 2 preseason games is exactly why a coach should not try different lineups in camp and during the first 12 games or so.
It doesn't matter if the lineup is optimal. What matters is if they have some kind of cohesion and coordination together as a unit. You set the starting five from day one and don't change it through the first dozen games. Then you can move a guy in or out.
I don't like what's going on with the Jazz mix and match. It's going to cost them a lot of games.
