I Kanter decide if we should have drafted Knight..

Post#1 » by sendai91 » Fri Jan 13, 2012 5:13 pm

I know it's super early in the season, and the sample size is very small, but I can't help but be impressed by some of the numbers that Brandon Knight is putting up in Detroit: 15ppg, 46% from the field and the same % from deep, over 5 rebounds a game, but his assists and turnovers are not very good at less than 3 apg so far. His PER numbers are very similar to Devin Harris, as it turns out.

Kanter has unquestionably shown flashes of real potential in very limited time, but I don't see him picking up more than 15mpg through the rest of the year due to Al's improved play, and the need for minutes for Favors / Millsap. I've been so underwhelmed with Harris's play that I can't help but wonder how differently the team would look with Knight on the floor backing up and learning from Earl..

Have to say the Jazz did the right thing by taking Kanter. The kid hasn't really played ball in 2 years and is killing in rebounding and defense. Big guys take time to develop where guards are usually pretty quick to hit their stride. Also I don't think Knight would be putting similar numbers up in the Jazz offense just because we like to pound inside first.

I warmed up to Knight right before the draft, he would have fit in well, but Kanter has sooo much more potential.

If we drafted Knight, Earl probably wouldnt even be on this team and Knight would still be backing up Harris at the PG.

I like Knight and think he will have a nice career, but at this point, Kanter's potential is still exponentially higher in my personal opinion.

I loved Knight before the draft, and really wanted to see him on the Jazz.

However Kanter has shown a ton in his first two weeks in the league, and he's only going to get better. He makes legitimate big time moves frequently enough to make me think he'll be able to put it all together and compete with the top players in the league for the next decade.

I also think guys like Knight aren't as rare in today's league as in years past, the PG position is stacked in the league right now, we'll get ours eventually.

Serviciables PG not selected in the lotto:
2011: Shumpert, Cole
2010: Bledsoe
2009: Holiday, Lawson, Teague, Maynor, Collison, Thorton
2008: Dragic, Chalmers
2007: Stuckey, Sessions
2006: Rondo, Lowry, Gibson
2005: Jack, Ellis
2004: Nelson, Udrih, Duhon
2003: Blake

Okay, only Rondo is allstar, and only a few are above average, but all those guys have started in one or more teams.
It's easier to get a decent PG than a good C. Enes and a above average PG is better than Knight and one C not selected in the lotto (remember Koufos, Fessenko, Borchardt or Ostertag)

Even though I tend to trust KOC for the most part on his draft picks, I'll admit I was a little concerned about Kanter leading up to the season. Those concerns were gone after our first game. This kid is going to punish people under the rim. He's a bully. He's got no respect for the personal space of others. Dude is going to be a Menace.

Koufos is doing really well in Denver. I said it when he left and I still maintain that he will be a very good player. Don't be surprised if he is starting by the end of the year; we should have never let him go.

Koufos is okay, but I wouldn't rather have him than any big guys we got now. Kanter will end up way better. With the exception of Matthews and Korver, I don't have a problem with anybody we have let go off the top of my head. Portland broke the bank to get Wesley, but I do miss his hustle, defense, and THREES! We can't shoot a lick. It looked like Korver wanted to stay in Utah and I wish we would have kept him. In the NBA, you need a guy who can come in and knock down a three. Yes I know he was bad at defense, but he didn't need to be in there long. For example, there was a lull in the Lakers game where neither bench could score, and it would have been invaluable to have someone who could provide a little instant O.

I liked the Kanter pick but I love the Kanter pick now. He will be an allstar caliber player, but Knights best case scenario is Devin Harris. Another PG that can score but doesnt know how to pass the ball. I would still prefer Jimmer over Knight, but definitely Kanter over everyone except Irving.

Everybody here said Brandon Knight was Devin Harris Jr. And it looks more and more true each day.

Glad we dodged that bullet.

Maybe bullet is the wrong word-- I just want a PG that likes to pass the ball, and can make the open shot if it gets to him.

I Kanter believe you would think that. J/K just like every one says his upside looks way to good for a big man because we all know how often the come around.

As bad as we need a PG, I'm sticking with Kanter right now. The guy is a complete rook and he still can play physical D and board like a vet. I'm thinking Sabonis but better.

Knight is looking good, but Knight has 4 years on Kanter.

Agreed. I know he got injured recently but makes me wish we had kept Maynor.

Kanter is the better pick, for all the reasons already stated. Knight was nice, but if the guy doesn't have super star talent, and I can't see any indication that he does, then you go with the big guy. Kanter's NBA future is still very much up in the air, obviously, but I think when its all said and done it will come down to him, Irving and Val for who was the best player out of this draft class.

Oops... I thought Knight played 4 in college... must have been thinking of another PG.
