Looking into the near future: retaining players

Hey guys, just wondering, who do you think we'll be retaining come FA time?

2012
Miles: Should be gone unless we can retain him for miinimum.
Howard: We'll probably have to pay him around MLE money if he keeps up his good numbers, not sure he'll want to stay since he'll probably draw interest from big markets.
Evans: Will come dirt cheap, retain him.
Watson: Seems to be happy with us, keep him.
Tinsley: No clue, depends if we draft a PG? League minimum at best.

2013 - This offseason will be tough
Harris: Gotta walk to resign our bigs.
Favors: Team option + extension (if he takes it)
Millsap: Give the man the money he deserves (though nothing TOO crazy), starter or not, who cares.
Jefferson: I'm afraid we'll have to let him go to commit to Favors and Millsap, not to mention Kanter in the future. If we can get him cheap, keep him.
Bell: Will be washed up, let him go
Hayward, Burks, and Kanter: Injuries aside, pick up their team options. In Hayward's case, try to lock him up.

This is the problem when you have young talent. You can't keep them all.

It will be very interesting to see what happens to OKC when they are faced with this situation.
It basically will give us an idea of how it can go down since they are a small market also.

This summer the Jazz may have to reluctantly trade away either Millsap or Jefferson to make room for Favors. I think they most likely trade away Millsap in the off season even though he is the teams best player right now. We will likely look for our new starting PG.

No way we should be trading away Millsap. I like Big Al, but he needs to be traded before Millsap does.

Looking forward, the frontcourt guys could probably get:

Millsap-4/52
Al-3/33
Favors-5/70 (hedging between if he breaks out as a star or just shows potential which is between 5/80 and 5/60)
Kanter-4/44

Would be extremely tough to keep more than two of them.

Seeing the contracts big men got this summer and knowing we have many bigs on our roster makes me nervous. One of them will go, and hopefully it will be Al.

Regardless, you amass as many talented young players as possible. Then you keep the best ones. Keeping them all is never the intent.

First off they all need to pan out and be good.

Everyone is to worried about nothing. Favors and Hayward aren't up for extentions untell 2014/2015 season and Kanter and Burks are the yr after that. The Jazz can and will match any offer that they recieve so they will be here for 6-7 more yrs at least. Thats a LONG time. So stop freaking now and enjoy the ride...
Plus Millsap should be resigned and Jefferson should as well if he would do it for around 10mil a season. Worth every penny of that. Doubt he would tho...

i agree i don't think there is anything to worry about just yet. Favors has already said he was sick of hearing his name in trades etc.. i reckon he will sign an extension when the time comes.. and if the team continues to grow and perform and competing why would u want to go anywhere else.. OKC there divisional rival is evident of that... trading milsap is silly.. gets better every year.. pay the guy his money.. (nothing too silly though LOL)

Im not freaking about the rookies, I know we can match them, even go over the cap for them, BUT Big Al and Millsap can get more than 10M. Look at what Nene, Chandler, Jordan, and some these other bigs got, and personally I think they are both better than those bigs. Also another team can offer our young guys some pretty large contracts, we may not be able to match them all.

Maybe I'm being naive, but I don't think retaining Jefferson is an issue. I just don't think he or Harris is part of the teams future, and those guys will eventually be traded away or won't be resigned when their contract is up.

Of course if Favors/Kanter totally bust, then retaining Jefferson might be a priority. I don't think they will though, at the very least one of them needs to be on Jefferson's level.

I think the Jazz should be able to keep Millsap along with Favors and Kanter, even at a higher price.

I think the only player Jazz should certainly retain besides youngsters is Milsap. Also NBA is recently full of PGs so it won't be hard to get a true PG from the draft. This guy will complete the current young core. In the long term Jazz won't need Harris and Jefferson, no need to retain them. Overall I see no problem at all, in fact Jazz is one of the few comfortable teams in the league provided that young Jazz players live up to their potential.

it's too early to think about these things.
