Rebuilding the Jazz

Post#1 » by supplyndemand69 » Wed Jan 25, 2012 5:43 pm

Hypothetically If you were in charge of the Jazz, what moves would you make ? Would you fully commit to rebuilding and keep the young guys ? Or would you make some moves to be able to contend ? If so who would you put on the block ?

Right now it's difficult.

I mean, our young core is good. Kanter, Favors, Hayward and Burks seems like real deal. Still, none of them are franchise players (at the moment) and with Jefferson and Millsap being fairly young (26-27) and playing better than never it's difficult to trade them while we're winning.

Miles is still young (24) and unconsistent.

I don't think we're going to rebuild. We're going to try to find more pieces. Then we´ll see what happens. If Jefferson or Millsap are injuried and Favors is a consistent 18-12 guy with 35 min, then you can expect some movements, but in offseason and for some improvement in PG area.

It depends a lot on how we look at the end of the season. If we look like a lottery or 1st round exit team at the trade deadline, I'd trade anyone not named Hayward, Burks, Kanter, Favors and Millsap for picks and/or expirings. We have a solid young core and Sap, who's a great player on a great contract. That plus picks and cap space is a great way to rebuild.
If we look like we can make it to the 2nd round, I wouldn't know what to do. I'd try to land a player who could make us contenders by trading a combination of Harris, Bell, TPE and picks, maybe even send one of the young guys along. The problem is it could backfire. We might end up losing financial flexibility and picks and not getting to contendership status. Maybe I'd just stand pat and see where our picks land and how our guys develop next season and then go for a big move.

KOC has done a GREAT job with this team the past 2 seasons. He might need to take a gamble now by trading away 2 of the Jazz talented players to get a superstar type player (ideally a PG) to get the Jazz to the next level. I would go strong after Rondo (likely having to take on Pierce's contract) with Stiemsma in exchange for Harris/Millsap/Kanter/Miles and GSW pick. The Jazz would then has a 2-3 year window to win it all.

PG Rondo Watson Tinsley
SG Hayward Bell Burks
C Jefferson Favors Stiesma
PF Favors Howard Evans
SF Pierce Howard Hayward

Boston then has young talent and cap space able to sign virtually any 2 free agents.

I've been on and off the Rondo bandwagon. I only think he works in the Jazz (or any) system if he's surrounded by deadeye shooters, which he wouldn't be. I guess you can always build around a guy, though.

I pull off this trade.

JAzz get a better PG and better outside shooting.

Lakers and Orlando would most likely want to do it.

Clips would only to get rid of one of their plethora of PGs and get a bit of flexibility.

Oh yeah, where do we sign?! :D Although, helping LAL get Dwight makes me want to puke, but it is inevitable anyway, might as well benefit from it. I also REALLY doubt the clippies would want to facilitate that trade as well.

If the Lakers want D12, and Stern doesn't object, they will get him. No one else can offer what the Lakers can. They also need a PG.

So, the Jazz benefit (with consistent outside shooting the Jazz could be a scary good team), and the Clips owner gets to save nearly $9M (he hates spending $) and they have the flexibility to pick up someone via a trade without having to give away anyone, such as a push for the playoffs.

I get a kick out of cruising around the different team sites and seeing the proposed deals. There is a strong tendency to overvalue a team's own players and commit highway robbery with other teams. Like the proposed deal that has the Jazz taking Pierce's salary off Boston's hands, like they are doing the Cs a big favor. Pierce right now is playing about as good a brand of basketball as ever. He just got over a minor injury and is rocking. If the Jazz had him playing 35 mpg at the 3 spot, the Jazz would be in very serious contention.

And he is a throw-in!

Truth is, the price for Pierce would be the GS pick plus either Hayward or Burks. Probably Devin Harris to make the deal work.

I usually pick up LeBron in the free agency in NBA 2k12.

Lakers probably say no and the LAC definitely say no especially if it helps the Lakers get Howard. LAC would want a #1 pick from someone maybe Orlando to make it more liekly.

Pierce is old! and makes alot of mney. Very few teams would want him. By trading him away and getting young players and expiring contracts the Celtics can rebuild including signing 2 max contracts in the off season. Rather you pay Pierce big money next 2 years or someone like Howard. The choice is easy isnt it. Thats why very few teams woulod want Pierce.

Rebuilding the Jazz

Myth of playoff xp for our young guys. Said in another thread.

How helpful is that "experience" when they are sitting on the bench?

IMO, an asset that could take us from pretender ( Nuggs, Sixers, Memphis) to contender is more important than a total of 60 minutes of playoff experience for Favors, 40 for Kanter 20 mins for Burks and 100 mins for Hay.

Rebulding the Jazz at the moment is the easiest for the moment. As they have talents to give at C and PF, for Guard positions. And this is easy to make out.
But the problem is how you define success. Utah seems to be a playoff team this year, if I own Utah, I would give up Jefferson and Millsap to acquire a good PG, who would commit to Utah for years and a physical young explosive Shooting Guard. Then probably Utah will not be at the playoffs. But next year and the year after the team will end up being a Championship contender.
This is it.

I'd try to package both Jefferson and Millsap for a young bonafide pg (Curry seems somewhat attainable at the moment, maybe Rondo too) and roll with that young pg + Burks + Hayward + Kanter + Favors

I can't see the team beating out either Portland or Memphis for a playoff slot.
