ESPN Trade Idea: Harris + Pick for Calderon

Post#1 » by Live Free » Fri Mar 2, 2012 5:39 am

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/story?id ... big-impact
2. The Toronto Raptors trade PG Jose Calderon to the Utah Jazz for PG Devin Harris and a future pick

Why the teams should make this trade: Calderon has had a nice seven-year career with the Raptors, but at 30 he might not be in the team's future. Head coach Dwane Casey is all about defense and Harris would provide an upgrade over Calderon.

On the other hand, Calderon (13.6 ppg, 10.2 apg in the past 10 games) would be tremendous running the Utah offense with big men Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap. He is one of the best assist-to-turnover ratio point guards in the NBA, whereas Harris has proven to be a bad fit for the Jazz, averaging just 9.1 ppg and 4.5 apg, the lowest numbers he has had since his early days in Dallas.

ESPN Trade Idea: Harris + Pick for Calderon

Pass. Harris has been better the last five games. Calderon is older and not enough of an upgrade to add a pick.

What's the point?

I rather have Harris than Calderon and I've been begging for a Harris trade since the start of the season.

I would..without the pick involved unless it was a late pick/2nd round. I just cannot see KOC trading away a future for Calderon who's contract is more expensive..Calderon is good..but not fast as Devin - it's almost a straight swap in value.

Harris has been playing actually really well *lately*.. and I've been bashing him left and right but I have to admit lately he's been *shooting well* at least. Still he doesn't fit this offense great..same goes with Al Jefferson. This is just my opinion, but the style of play the Jazz use requires passing...teamwork and passing. Finding the open man..assists... execution. The idea of Calderon with Burks/Hayward at the 2 sounds really good to me 8-)

But Instead the ball doesn't move fast enough, people cutting to the basket are not getting the ball - Al turns into a black hole when he decides to try and earn his paycheck taking on 3 people at the same time..cannot rebound, he's like a really tall PF playing a center postion.. . Heck even Kanter deserves more time than him in my opinion. I wonder if Calderon would fix this?

Harris can run...Calderon is a pass first type and I like it. I hope we can get him, I just don't like the pick idea especially at Calderon's age... gotta be something else? CJ Miles? Raja Bell? We just signed Demarre Carrol and nobody has really seen what he does because we're overstocked. Gotta ship people out.

No way. I've ways been a huge fan of Jose's stellar A/TO ratio but come on....talent-wise Devin is just a better player, and younger and more athletic. I don't u.derstand the notion that somehow we would owe Toronto a pick with this package. If it's gonna work at all, it should be the other way around.

Just thinking about things, I'd actually trade the same proposal (first + Harris) for Rhondo over Calderon. Rhondo is younger/longer contract and passes well.. if he's not available I'd seriously look at Calderon as a 2nd option.

*edit* and yeah..that pick.. I can't see us doing that for Calderon something else..not a pick.

I find it funny reading the Toronto forum that they think the difference between Harris and Calderon is an unprotected first. Are you kidding me??? If anything, Calderon's trade kicker would require an asset from them.

Rather have Harris unless I'm getting a pick. If I have to give up a pick there is no point even discussing a deal.

Devin may be coming into his own. I mean, looking at small samples is bad, but I don't see these players long term samples being wildly different. Maybe the Jazz have to adjust to Devin too.

Calderon, by all reports, is an atrocious defensive player...... So any benefit that his efficient offensive game would give us would be completely wiped away by his defensive shortcomings......

So, I'd rather keep the pick...... And Harris......

Would all of the naysayers have the same opinion of a Harris and Pick for Nash? I would bet many would think that was a steal.

We need a younger PG to grow with our team not retire when they are ready to compete.

Giving up a pick would be sort of ludicrous, as many have already stated. Talent-wise, I'd say they're about equal, with the edge going to Devin. I do think Calderon is better suited to our offense, but we really have no incentive to take on an older guy with a bigger contract -- especially since the Jazz and Devin seem to finally be adjusting to one another.

Honestly few weeks ago i would do that, but now since Devin is starting to playing like he used to in past that trade its totally pointless, i say more we dont need any new pg just get some one with range for goodness sake

True, even for the season, his numbers don't look worse on a PER36 minute basis. Also what has he ever done for the Raptors? He's not an upgrade of a player, and even if he's an upgrade of a playmaker, would he make a difference? Adding picks would make this ridiculous. Harris has been playing great of late. With Al and Harris playing great we might be able to lure in a real player instead of someone like Calderon. We have to go for Rondo, or something of that caliber.

as i like Calderon, he's older and slower, especially on D. Add that Harris has a very reasonable contract, the request for a 1st pick is laughable.

He's a defensive liability to be honest. Teams target him when he's on the floor.

He'd help on offense but he'd just cripple an allready poor defensive backcourt on the other end.

Yeah, let's trade a pick so we can stay mediocre.

Harris is doing fine for the time being, we can trade him away in the offseason.
