Best Next Move?

Post#1 » by SoCalJazzFan » Sat Apr 14, 2012 6:29 pm

Well, I was hopeful that the Jazz would be a playoff team and that they would still manage to get the GSW top 10 pick- until yesterday! It now looks like no playoff and only a mid-first round pick.

If this bears out, what is the Jazz' best move going forward?

Option 1- Keep the core and replace the expiring contracts (CJ, Evans, etc) and hope that the team comes together and the young guys get that much better and run out Harris, AJ, and/or Milsap contracts for all they are worth; and if that doesn't pan out trade one or more of their expiring contracts before the deadline next Spring?

Option 2- Look to trade AJ or Sap while they are hot in the next couple of months to address team needs and pick up longer term contracts?

Personally, I like the thought of trading AJ to an Indiana for Granger or Philly for Iggy scenario. They both have a year of contract after AJ. They bring needed wing scoring, and in the case of Iggy good defense. 82 games indicates that the combo of Sap and Favors is the most effecient (Sap scores and Favors defends), so this would open up this combo.

If no move is made, teams such as Denver, GSW, and Houston probably get better next year and the Jazz probably don't improve too much, placing them in the same situation next April.

I think it is clear that one of Al or Sap need to go. I would prefer Al being traded by far as I love the Millsap favors combo on both sides of the ball. Is it really feasible that Indy gives up granger? If this has legs I would do it in a second!

I am 100% convinced that the Jazz have already made their decision and are moving Al this offseason. I am 110% convinced. 200%. 300%. We are lucky in the sense that Al will be in his contract's last year next year, which should be enough to make any tempted teams bite on making the move. I don't think we will be asking for a lot.

If (and I mean when) the Jazz win tonight, I still believe they'll make the playoffs, so no late lottery from ourselves.

It also looks like GS is going to be a bunch of (insert insult here), so we probably won't be getting that pick either.

That being said... I still think the best thing they could do is somehow get into the late lottery. This draft is really, really deep and the crop of attainable players around the the 10-15 range are exactly the type of players the Jazz need. Landing any one of the three PG's out of Lillard, Marshall and Rivers would be an amazing addition to this team (Even Teague would be a good pickup). I really believe that all 3 are going to be great NBA players, and they would fit perfectly into our developing young core. There are also guys like Jeremy Lamb, Terrence Jones, Jeffery Taylor, etc. that would help bolster our wing positions (I don't think Josh Howard, CJ Miles or Raja Bell play for us next year) if we don't manage to land ourselves a PG. This draft is just setup too perfectly for the Jazz and their future plans to pass up the opportunity of adding another young piece to our young core. If you're the Jazz management, you gotta take full advantage of it.

I was all about making a move for Granger or Iggy before the season started, but now I've really cooled off on it. While I really LOVE both Granger and Iggy, they just don't fit into our future plans IMO. They're only going to take minutes away from our young guys and eat up a lot of cap space while doing so. I just don't see their addition to this team being the difference maker for the price they would demand.

I totally agree with you. I can see Indy letting Granger go for Big Al as they likley dont pony up the money for Hibbard. If Big Al doesnt work out for them they let Al go with his expiring contract and use his cap money to sign someone. They also save money by saving one year of Granger's contract which may be over-priced.

That doesn't make sense for Indy. They are at a level where they need to get to the next level. They sre not declining.

I like the Jefferson-Millsap-Favors rotation...... Except I think Favors should be getting much closer to 30 minutes...... And Kanter will show a lot of improvement next year having spent the off-season with Jazz training staff......

Although previously I was the conductor of the "Deal Paul Millsap Train", and almost the sole passenger, I think we'll never get equal value for him, so we should keep him and make the most out of him...... I think he works much better next to Favors than to Jefferson, so Corbin needs to find time for them together......

What we really need is an ace wing player, or even just a slightly better than decent wing player....... Pair that with Hayward, Harris of late, and an improved Burks, and we're set......

Well year after year Jazz fans say we should trade this guy like boozer, Kirenlenko, Okur, ect.. for something and it never happens. The only time we got anything useful for a player recently was when we traded a star in williams and imo we didnt get enough value but thats besides the point. And besides the Korver trade, we haven't made any savvy trades that really improved our team in recent history imo. We have no star player or future allstars imo besides mabey Burks and thats only if we let him ball dominate which probably won't happen on this team. Plus predictably we didn't make the playoffs and probably won't get that GS pick.

I know I sound negative but lets be real. Millsap, Jefferson and Harris will all be in Jazz uniforms next year unless they are salary dumped for peanuts. And we are all complaining about at least a decent pg but we had one in eric maynor who we salary dumped. Just look at our recent history, besides williams and using that exception to get a player everyone wants to get rid of; When do we every get anything useful for anyone or not just let them walk for nothing? Why would it be any different this time?

If Kanter were getting more minutes than the same people would be complaining about Favors not getting enough minutes, or Millsap, or Big Al. There are only so many minutes. Kanter is our least prepared big man at the moment, therefore he should be getting the least amount of minutes. Makes perfect sense.

OMO Al for AI or Granger is the best possible move.

Both of these guys provide what the team is missing, and expire right when it's time to extend the first crop of youngn's.

A possible trade with a W-W-W scenario could be Al to the 76ers, Iggy to the Pacers and Granger to the Jazz. Seems to make sense. 6ers need a go-to scorer, Granger will be redundant and Iggy would look nasty next to George.

A PG that can hit a 3 and properly run the pick and roll would be awesome.

I can't think of a good fit with the PGs that are tradable. I think Brandon Jennings could be had. Jarrett Jack. It's a PF league right now.

I like Jennings, but he reminds me a lot of Harris, both the good and the bad......

I don't like Jennings at all ... but, I haven't watched him all that much either.

Jennings is a chucker and doesn't even really play PG that well, I'd rather have Ellis than Jennings at PG.
